The Lake Superior & Ishpeming Railroad abandoned its line to Big Bay, MI in 1958 and sold it to the Marquette and Huron Mountain in 1963. The Marquette & Huron Mountain Railroad was formed in 1965. At president was Mr. J. A. Zerbal. The tracks that the M&HM ran on were the Lake Superior & Ishpeming's "Big Bay Division." The M&HM ran between Marquette, MI and Big Bay, MI. The track ran 24 miles with the official count at 25.07 miles. Stations were:
Marquette | 0 | |
Sugar Loaf | 2 | |
Delta | 6 | |
Birch | 12 | |
Antlers | 18 | |
Homeier | 20 | |
Alder | 21 | |
Big Bay | 24 |
The M&HM was meant to operate daily passenger trains between Marquette and Big Bay. According to Jerry A., the M&HM ran a decent trip from a railfan standpoint, but were too far from large population to become the tourist operation that they had hoped to be. "You cannot make a profit on railfans alone." Later, the M&HM was nearly cut in half with the line extending to a place called Buckroe. The M&HM was eventually abandoned in the 1970's because it probably defaulted on its payments to the LS&I.
The M&HM purchased 11 Baldwin 2-8-0 locomotives from LS&I. They were numbers 18-23, 29, and 32-35. After the M&HM went under, the locomotives reverted back to LS&I ownership and were eventually sold.
