I'm gathering info for a friend. In the 1950's I owned a standard poodle that had seizures diagnosed as epilepsy. He lived to age 6. His entire litter had seizures. This was a rescue dog and our first intro to poodles. I've been searching for his ped gree. F. L-F

I would very much like to particiate in the survey. I have a 13 year old that began episodes in Aug.1999. It has progressively gotten worse/more frequent. He is under the care of vets at a teaching hospital now. Phenobarbytal has begun to loose effectiven ss. I am to have a heart monitor placed on him tomorrow & record activities for 24 hours. A multitude of tests have been run. I would be delighted to share info if anyone needs what we have.

Your information was very good. Have 2 poodles, 1 was rescued from dog pound and then we purch from rescuer. He is about 2 1/2 and has seizures on a regular basis 4-8 weeks. About 20-40 minutes. Today it lasted 1 1/2 hours. Do the mentioned drugs hav any side effects to the poodles internal organs or functions? I know some chemicals can. If you have any opportunity to comment I would appreciate. We have not had him to a vet to confirm but my husband is a nurse and is familiar with seizures and I h d a poodle growing up with seizures. Thank you.

2/24/00-My standard had what I think is a seizure today-he seemed to be "spooked" and ran/crawled a short distance, cowered, shook, and had tremors. This lasted approximately 3 minutes, and he seemed very scared-he did not loose consciousness-nor did he oam or vomit, but his front paws seemed to not be able to hold him up, and he just layed there. I cuddled him, and he seemed soothed-after a while he calmed down and the tremors stopped. After a few minutes, he got up and started to romp and play like b fore. This never happened before-I am not sure it was a seizure, but I do know that poodles are prone to this, or at least I have been told this. Is this true? He is 4 1/2 yrs old. Could this have been his first?

Other family members related to him t rough one particular dog have seizures as well. They are all toys.Darla

I check your web site because my poodle is 15 years old, and for the past two days she has not eaten. She shimmers most of the time and sometimes has a jerking motion. She has trouble standing and looses her balance. Sometimes the inner eyelid appears. I am very worried about her. Last week there was bood in her stool and the vet did an xray and a sonogram. Her stomach was fine. He said she had a minor infection in her colon. He said it was colitis. She has trouble eating because her teeth chatter ll the time. I took her in to the vet today and he gave her an iv because she wasn't eating. I have her home now but will take her back tomorrow morning. He said he would do blood test in hopes that he can find out what is wrong. If you have any ideas that would help me help my vet, I'll appreciate it. I'm not sure if this is considered a comment but I'm concerned about Muffie. That's her name. bcarpe2200@aol.com

I am completely new to dog owning, and in particular, owning one charming little poodle named Barnaby. But I'm researching the internet because he is at 19 weeks beginning to show some signs of what MIGHT be epilepsy--biting into the air around his head nd barking without cause, and so on. I'm very, very keen to get some information about treatment here. David Piper.

Our Ivy, 7 years old, started seizing on January 1,1999 and has done so approximately every 3 months since; always between 3 and 6 am. The weather is always different and "stress" would be hard to judge. The seizures last approx. 10 minutes or less and a e grand mal. Her vet did bloodwork and found her thyroid level to be low, hence she has been on thyroid medication since January, 1999. She gets phenobarbitol after the seizure and for 2 days following. Ivy was a "brood bitch" for a Kennel in San Diego had 2 or 3 litters and the owners gave her to us as they knew we would provide a good and loving home for her. I'm not in possession of her pedigree nor am I familiar with any of her relatives. I was told that many of her offspring went on to be Champio s. She has never been shown and we promised not to. However, in retrospect, when we got her 2 years ago, she had a severe ear infection which turned out to be psudomonis (sp) After much medication and treatment, we opted for ear surgery which was very successful and have had no recurrence of the infection. I guess I'm just glad to visit these pages and try to gain an understanding of these seizures. I am comfortable with her vet and am calmer during these seizures but saddened all the same. I'm hoping to find info on what to expect in the future for Ivy. re there any other webpages or books that would help?

One of my poodles(all three are toys) is epileptic. She has experienced at least one seizure before a storm; I am not sure about the others because she was in the care of my parents. She just suffered another seizure of about four minute duration this af ernoon prior to a thunderstorm. She was, however just vaccinated and recieves a very high fat diet due to the fact that she also suffers from bladder stones and her veterinarians have suggested c/d diet which is very high in fat(although she is very thin nd one of the other poodles has gained weight due to the food which he shares- this cannot be helped). We would all be happy to help with the research in any way, and are located here in Tallahassee. Daisy, the epileptic, is eleven years old, Ollie is twelve, and Cody(the fat one) is four. All are AKC registered. If you have any helpful information, please let me know.

A woman I met New Years Eve E Mailed me this site. I found it very interesting. I have a toy poodle but she is fine. My problem is with my 3lb yorkie. He is 5 years old and has been epileptic since he was 5 or 6 mo. old. He is on pheno but still seizures t least once a month. He is like a child to me and I am so frustrated because I can't accept that is he "eplileptic" and thats it. I panic with every seizure that it may be his last one and I would really like to talk to you. My vet says he doubts serious y if he has liver shunt because there are other symptoms besides seizures and he doesn't have any of them. Can I communicate with you whether it be by e-mail or whatever regarding this situation. I have spent hours online and at the library and I feel I h ve gone in circles. Thanks.

I began steps to participate in the research, but my husband had recently died and I was at such loose ends I found myself not completing things. I have since been told that my MP's seizures are not due to idopathic (sp?) e;ilepsy, but rather are more th n likely connected to an extremely high fat content in his blood - the reason for which is undetermined.
