Easy Shamrock

Supplies needed:  scissors, circle and small heart shape to trace, green and white construction paper

Cut three small heart shapes using the tracer out of green construction paper.  Trace a circle shape from green construction paper.  Cut out a portion of the circle to resemble a crescent shape.  This will be the stem.  Glue the three hearts together forming the shamrock leaf.  Shape onto the white construction paper and add the "stem".

Hearty Shamrock

Cut three hearts from construction paper.  Form a shamrock by gluing the points of the hearts together on another piece of paper.  Draw a stem.

Display a real shamrock or a picture of it.  If using a picture, try to find a life size picture.  Discuss the color, shape, number of leaves and any other characteristics.  Provide this information:

the shamrock closes its leaves in the evening,  a lot of people believe it brings good luck, the shamrock is the nation symbol of Ireland.

Irish Potato Bounce

Paint an old tennis ball brown to resemble a potato.  Mark 5 aluminum pie tins each with a number 1-5 in the center.  Arrange the pans in a

circle leaving an open space in the center.  To play, bounce the potato in the center area and try to make it land in a pan.  Give each child five bounces.

Shamrock Sun Catcher

Supplies needed:  shamrocks or clovers, wax paper, green or white construction paper.

Begin by pressing the clover or shamrock between a book with two pieces of waxed paper.  Cut a large shamrock shape from construction paper reserving the actual shamrock cutout for another project.  Glue the resulting shamrock shape "frame" to the clover containing waxed paper.

Coffee Filter Shamrocks

Supplies needed:  Coffee filter for each child, blue and yellow food coloring, eye dropper, two small jars (baby food jars)

Precut a shamrock shape from the coffee filter for each child.  Mix water and the yellow food coloring in the jar.  Repeat for the blue.  Let the children use the eye droppers to drip colors on the filter shamrock.  The colors will run together and make beautiful shamrocks.

Green Rice Decorations

Supplies needed:  rice, green food coloring, green tag board, glue

To prepare the rice, soak in a small amount of food coloring mixed with water.  When the desired shade of green is reached, drain the water and let the rice dry on paper towels overnight.  Cut shamrock shapes out of green tag board.  Let the children brush diluted glue on their shapes and sprinkle green rice over the glue.
