I am sure my great grandfather was named after this man. (See links for more information on Lorenzo Dow.) Maybe the family had seen him preach and Lorenzo�s parents were moved enough to name a child after him. Lorenzo is a very unusual name for my family. From my grandmother, Clara Rowland Shaffer�s account: �Lorenzo�s mother was Mary Saunders King, born in England, and his father James Archer was Scotch-Irish. Jane and Lorenzo came from Bellefonte, Centre, Pennsylvania and settled in Fayette County, Iowa permanently in 1857. (I believe they were in Fayette in 1853, but after the death of their first two children returned to Bellefonte. Lorenzo, also, took his family to Bellefonte during the Civil War.) Due to their poverty, she was unable to further her formal education beyond a rural school. Yet she became self-educated and her mind was keen. There are no words sufficient to describe my mom. Suffice it to say, she was as nearly perfect as humanly possible, a true Christian in every sense of the word. She died of a heart attack. She married Malcolm Lane Rowland and they farmed 4 miles east of West Union, Fayette, Iowa on the West Union-Elgin Road.� Note: This family was interested in preserving family history and this was passed to my grandmother and to me. Three of the children of Jane and Lorenzo bear family surnames as middle names: Graham, Saunders, and Melbourne. It is likely that Carpenter and Darnell are family surnames, as well. *See Archer Photo page.
