In 1796, Bethel Twsp., Fulton, Pennsylvania Nathan Fidler was assessed for
two horses and one cow. In 1808 they moved to Belmont county, Ohio and in
1814 to Knox County, Ohio. On April 3, 1813 he applied to President James
Madison for his first patent in the territory Northwest of the Ohio River and
above the Mouth of the Kentucky River. He received his grant Dec. 24,
1816 of 1,000 acres at 33 cents per acre-- on which, in 1818, he built a
two-story colonial type brick house. It was two and one-half miles northwest of
Fredericktown. The home that Nathan Fidler built on a knoll near the road
among maple trees in 1818 was razed in 1915. Back of the house was a long
low sugar-making shad for boiling sap from the maple trees that were in the
large grove. In early spring fire under large kettles burned slowly and steady
throughout the day and night for weeks, fed by choice wood from timber trees
in the woods. This was a large sugar camp.
The brick home was inherited by Nathans son, William Fidler. On Feb 24,
1871 the heirs of William Fidler deeded the farm of some 190 acres to William
Wagner, a bachelor, for $14,000. As long as the brick home stood, the Fidler
reunions were held there. Nathan Fidler made his will Aug. 6, 1838 in
Middlebury Township. He son, William was named administrator; the 1/4
section of outlying land in Richland county was willed to son Thomas;
grandson William F. Lewis received a bequest besides the other children of
Nathan. Witnesses to the will were William Kinney and William Kirby and
Samuel Bruce, the only one not appearing when the will was probated. Bonds
were held for William Fields, James Johnston, David Ewers, Absolom Thrift,
Hezekiah Windham, William Wright, and Lawrence Vanbuskirk.
