HELP

The help is what I need!!! To get this and the rest of the web pages up to date or of interest!

As you can see on my Genealogy page, that hobby takes a good bit of my time. Retirement is great, but I have a lot of trouble finding time for all the hiking, jogging, skiing, fishing, RV camping, playing and golfing I would like to do. We now live in Brookings, Oregon, but not all the information on this page is updated to this area yet.

Running

Two years ago, we [The "Questionable Entry" team] had just finished the Hood to Coast Race from Mt. Hood to Seaside in Oregon. We were 606 out of 987 overall, but we all finished without injury and without walking. I actually achieved an 8 minute per mile pace over some tough legs [5,17, & 29 for those who know]. The previous year's team ["Insanity Runs in the Family," which was an all family team] did better overall with a 420 place out of 993 teams. This year, I did not do the Hood to Coast race, although family members did. [NOTE: Nationwide Insurance no longer sponsors the race and Fred Meyers started doing so in 2004.] Instead, I did the Saturn Relay from Calistoga to Santa Cruz, with Helen's sister Sherry, her husband John, nephew Ben and a bunch of other crazy folks. We made it! We were 103 out of 241 or 36th out of 84 in the open men's division!

I am really a fairly slow jogger and only run so I can keep eating and live to play with my grandkids. I also get a great deal of running information as well as signing up for events at the Active.com site. Another place to look for upcoming races is at RoadRunner or at The Schedule.

One of the places I used to run and ski in Alaska was the TsalteshiTrails. I have participated in the >Lost Lake run< out of Seward, the Mayor's Half Marathon in Anchorage, the >Only Fools Run at Midnight< race in Juneau and others on the Kenai Peninsula. One of my favorite runs is the 5.3 mile Wagon Trail Run in Hope, Alaska. See the EMS site for information on this run. If you go to the Anchorage Runners Club, you can obtain a copy of the 2005 Runner's Calendar for Alaska on this page and it discusses some of these runs.

In Oregon, in addition to the Hood to Coast Relays in the past, I've participated in a few runs this year such as the Shamrock Run and the Mt Angel Octoberfest run. I hope to join the The South Coast Running Club and compete in some of their races this next year, although their web page seems to be somewhat dated. [If my bum knee gets better, now that I'm over my hernia operation]. The Oregon Road Runners Club is another opportunity to join or find local races, that I'll be using. Also, I've run a few races in the Washington D. C. area while I lived there and subsequently while visiting my family. I even ran a >Hangover 10 Miler< on New Years a few years ago in Louisville, Kentucky with my son, Steve while he lived there.

Hiking

I had to put something into this category, as I've enjoyed hiking for years. My sister and I have done a long hike once a year for many years. This year we were limited in our trip to Alaska to two shorter hikes. I've been hiking this past year occasionally with the Curry County General Hospital associated "Sole Pursuits" hiking group. We have had some great hikes, but the best was a May hike 12 miles into Paradise and the Paradise Lodge in the Rogue River Wilderness Area.

Golfing

A good place to check out various golf courses is found at this golf site. My home course in Kenai was a great course and we would often see moose or caribou. Our local course in Brookings, Oregon is called the Salmon Run Course and is plenty challenging for the duffer with no skill, such as your's truly. Of course, the most popular of late is the Bandon Dunes course which has been ranked as one of the best in the country. It is about 90 miles from here and is a better course than I am golfer, so I haven't tried it yet.

RV Camping

This is an area of fun we had about 30 years ago in New Mexico and Alaska -- Sleeping in a Jeep and finally getting a 13 1/2 foot Aristocrat in Fairbanks, Alaska. WELL, we've turned the corner now and have a 26 foot Nash Travel Trailer which we pull with a Ford Expedition. This summer we journeyed for about 9 weeks through Oregon, Washington, British Columbia and Yukon, Canada, Alaska, Idaho and back through Washington and Oregon. We had a blast! A few of the photos and some of the RV Parks will be shown here soon. Meanwhile, some RV sites of interest are:

Other Activities

Someday, this page will deal with these hobbies and organizations in more detail. It may also include the Alaska Kenai Lions Club, a 35-year chartered club of Lions International in which Joe was an active member when we lived in Alaska. It may also have information on the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life, on the Kenai Peninsula in Alaska. These were two of my primary interests, but I've not yet gotten involved in them in Oregon yet. I'm also hoping to be involved in helping to build the Coastal Trail and in the Habitat for Humanities house here in Brookings. I'm also a would be writer, and will probably get involved with the South Coast Writers group.
