What's the BFT Ring?

A web ring is a series of sites on the Internet that usually share a common topic of interest and are linked to help visitors easily navigate from one site to another. The Broughton Family Tree Ring also known as the BFT Ring is a webring designed for the specific purpose of creating a chain of web sites and home pages that contain genealogical information on ancestors and descendants with the surname Broughton (or a spelling variation thereof.) We should clarify that not all of the sites on the ring specialize solely in the Broughton name, so they may contain pedigrees for other surnames, but all are guaranteed to have at least a few Broughtons.

Requirements for Joining the BFT Ring

Anyone can join the BFT Ring as long as their web page/site meets ALL of the following requirements: (Note: You MUST agree to abide by them before you apply.)

  1. The main focus of the web page(s)/web site is genealogy and should be primarily non-commercial in nature.
  2. The site contains information on a minimum of 3 people with the surname Broughton (or a spelling variation thereof, such as Braughton, Brotton, Broctun, etc.)
  3. The site is well maintained with no broken links or missing graphics.
  4. The site does NOT contain any profanity, nudity, obscenities or other Adult-Only-oriented material which would be unsuitable for children.

There are two ways to be deleted from the ring:

  1. You remove your ring code. Yes, people do join for the hits, but remove the ring code. You will immediately be removed from "rotation" in the ring if you do!
  2. You modify your site so it no longer adheres to all of the requirements as listed above. Sites on the ring will be checked regularly to make certain the ring is in tact and remains consistent with the goals for which it was created.

Should your site be removed, we will immediately e-mail you and tell you why.

Step-by-Step Guide to
Setting Up Your Site as a BFT Ring Member

  1. Read the Requirements for Joining the BFT Ring. You MUST agree to abide by them before you apply.
  2. Complete the Application Form and Submit Your Site to the BFT Ring.
  3. Once your site is submitted, you will receive a confirmation e-mail message which will contain your Site ID as well as your password. Write it down and keep this information! You will need it if you should ever want to edit your site's profile.
  4. You will also be provided with a few HTML ring codes (also known as HTML fragments) for the BFT Ring. The one sent to you will already contain your Site ID and all the necessary information. It can be "cut" from your e-mail and "pasted" exactly as-is directly onto your page and save it. An example of the HTML ring code is shown here as it might appear on your site:

You can also choose from a few alternative codes, but these will require some modification on your part. Either way, one of them must be placed on the site where visitors can easily view or navigate to the Broughton genealogical information. Also, the code must be in place on the site within 7 days of site submission.
  5. The graphic associated with the ring code (pictured above) must also be saved and uploaded to your own site. To save the graphic, right click on it and select "Save Picture As" or "Save Image As" whichever the case may be. A dialog box will appear with the name of the graphic already filled in. Choose where on your computer you wish to save it, then click the Save button. You can then upload it to your web site's directory as you would any other graphic for your site.
  6. Once the ring code and graphic are on your page, e-mail the Ringmaster at familytree@broughton.net to let us know you are ready to be added to the ring. We will NOT automatically add your site so it is important that we hear from you. If we do not hear from you within 7 days of receiving your submission application, your site will be removed from the queue, and a new application form would have to be submitted.
