Title - Adaptation-aware encryption of scalable H.264/AVC video for content security

Abstract - Data encryption is one of the key information security technologies used for safeguarding multimedia content from unauthorised access and manipulation in end-to-end delivery and access chains. This technology, combined with the appropriate cryptographic methods, effectively prevents the content against malicious attacks, so as to protect its authenticity as well as integrity. While encryption based security is ensuring the authorised consumption of the multimedia content, content adaptation technologies have the primary goal of providing means for wider dissemination of the content across diverse networks, devices and users, and thus enriching user satisfaction and experience of the delivered content within a given set of usage environment constraints. Traditionally, protected contents can only be adapted at trusted adaptation engines residing between the source and end-users since they have to be fully decrypted before performing the necessary adaptation operations. The drawback of such a process is that it significantly limits the availability and flexibility of adaptation engines applicable for adapting protected contents on the fly. Thus, this paper proposes a novel scalable H.264/Advance Video Coding (AVC)-compatible video encryption technique, which is also transparent to adaptation engines in an end-to-end video delivery scenario. The proposed technology relies on keeping syntax elements required for performing the adaptation operations clear (i.e., not encrypted). The effectiveness of the proposed technique has been successfully verified in scenarios, where both conventional Joint Scalable Video Model (JSVM) bit stream extracting and random packet dropping mechanisms are used.

Title - Utilising Macroblock SKIP Mode Information to Accelerate Cropping of an H.264/AVC Encoded Video Sequence for User Centric Content Adaptation

Abstract - This paper proposes a framework for a virtual classroom application based on a Virtual Collaboration System (VCS), which is being developed under the VISNET II Network of Excellence (NoE)1, and discusses adaptation technologies that enable seamless access to classroom sessions while intellectual property and digital rights are managed. The proposed virtual classroom framework enables academic institutions to conduct their collaborative lecture series, to which registered students will be able to attend remotely and interactively over the Internet. Furthermore, the general public may also follow the classroom sessions under certain restrictions imposed by the participating institutions. In order to facilitate seamless access to a heterogeneous audience that is composed of users with various preferences and privileges accessing the classroom sessions over different network infrastructures and using terminal devices with diverse capabilities, context-aware content adaptation is required to meet constraints imposed by the usage context and enhance the quality of the user experience. Thus, this paper describes the concepts and functionalities of a context-aware content adaptation platform that suits the requirements of such multimedia application scenarios. This platform is able to consume low-level contextual information to infer higher-level contexts, and thus decide the need for and type of adaptation operations to be performed upon the content. In this way, it is aimed to meet usage constraints while also satisfying restrictions imposed by the Digital Rights Management (DRM) to govern the use of protected content. (Full Paper)

Title - Context based motion and disparity vector prediction algorithm for H.264 based stereoscopic video coding

Abstract - H.264 video coding standard supports 3D video through dedicated Stereo Video Information (SVI) Supplemental Enhancement Information (SEI) message. This SEI message allows main and auxiliary frames be coded into alternative pictures in which disparity information can also be utilized. However, due to the presence of both disparity and motion vectors at the neighborhood of a given macroblock, the H.264 predicted motion vector motion vector concept becomes less efficient. This paper presents a novel motion and disparity vector prediction algorithm that overcomes this drawback. Results show that the proposed algorithm achieves up to 1dB gain compared to the conventional motion vector prediction algorithm. (Abstract/Full Text)

Title - An Intelligent Rate Control Algorithm to Improve the Video Quality at Scene Transitions for off-line MPEG-1/2 Encoders

Abstract - MPEG-I/2 are the most popular compression schemes used in consumer video products. The significant problem in these compression schemes is high fluctuation in output data rate over the video sequence. These encoders, in general, utilize a rate control algorithm in order to maintain the output data rate at a constant level regardless of the properties of the video sequence and differences in compression ratios of different picture types. Conventional rate control algorithms such as TM5 cannot maintain the picture quality at scene transitions where statistical properties of pictures changes significantly. This paper presents an innovative algorithm to improve the video quality at sudden and gradual scene transitions. The algorithm works in three steps. The fixed encoding structure of the MPEG data stream is disturbed by forcing an extension or termination of the last GOP of the first scene such that the first anchor picture of the second scene becomes an I-coded picture. The complexity parameters of each picture types are, then, corrected with an iterative algorithm. P-pictures are provided with additional bits to cope with inefficient forward prediction during gradual scene transitions. Experimental results show that with the proposed algorithm, both objective and subjective quality of MPEG video can be improved significanty during scene transitions. (Full Text)
