We dont get told much about Spike's previous 'life' until Season 5.
In the Episode Fool for Love, Spike tells the tale of how he was a poet, turned
down by his one love- Cecily. From the surroundings, William was probably the
standard upper-class sort of bloke you'd find in Victorian England. If you could
imagine the total opposite of the Spike we see in the present time, you'd have
a perfect William. His one failing was his abismal attempt at writing rhyming poetry.
After getting ceremoniously rejected by the subject of his poetic musings, William
gets sired by Drusilla. Here begins his journey as the Big Bad Spike.
