OCONEE ENTERPRISE, 27 JULY 1945:
Last Veteran Of Civil War In Oconee is Dead
Henry Doggett of Statham, passed away at his home Saturday after an illness of several weeks.  Mr. Doggett, because of his lovable personality, kindness and generosity to all with whom he was associated, was known and called "Pappy" by his family and countless friends throughout northeast, Ga.
Henry Hillman Doggett joined the forces of the Confederacy at the age of sixteen, serving with Major Cook's battalion from Clarke county.  After the war he returned to Oconee county where he was married to Miss Alma Belle Ward, who preceded him in death by 8 years.
"Pappy remained actively engaged in his farm interests until about ten years ago when his eyes began to fail him and he was forced to retire.
However, he never lost interest in the affairs of his state and the nation.  He was much concerned about the present war and followed its progress closely.  Mentally alert to the end, he sat upon his bed and discussed the Japanese War with his family a few days before his death.
Funeral services were held at the home of H. C. Johnson, at 2 o'clock (CWT).  Burial followed in the Griffith cemetery, Oconee county.
Surviving Mr. Doggett are two children, Mrs. J. A. Puckett, Athens, and F. A. Doggett, Oxford, Ga., fourteen grandchildren, twenty-four great-grandchildren and one great-great grandson.
