WILL: 26 June 1944, Oconee Co., GA. 6 Probate: 1 Oct. 1945, Watkinsville, Oconee Co., GA. 6 Notes: Henry joined Company B, Cook's Reserve Battalion, a Georgia Militia organized from the employees of the Athens Armory in late 1863, and which was transferred to the Reserves 24 Feb. 1864; the command saw action in the Battle of Griswoldville in Nov. 1864 and at the siege of Savannah, where Major Cook was killed, and was included in the surrender of Gen. Joseph E. Johnston on 26 April 1865. Henry joined as a private "about August 1864," in Athens, GA, for a period that was to be one year. Cook's Battalion was also known as the 23rd Battalion, GA State Guard, the Athens Battalion, and the Enfield Rifle Battalion. Henry made a pension application on 17 Sep. 1910, listing his address as Statham, GA RFD. His tax value in 1908, 1909, and 1910 was $151.00. The cash value of his property in 1910 was as follows: 1 horse $150, 1 cow $25, 2 hogs $20, buggy and wagon $50, household & kitchen furniture $100; total $345.00, with no reported income. It appears that his pension was okayed for 1911, but no information shows up after that. 4 Listed as a farm hand living in the household of his father and step-mother in the 1870 Federal Census, Sandy Creek, Clarke, GA. Listed as a farmer living with his wife in the household of his brother William in the 1880 Federal Census, High Shoals, Oconee, GA. Listed as a farmer in his own household in the 1900, 1910, 1920, and 1930 Federal Census, Dark Corner, Oconee, GA (indicated as able to read and write). In 1944 the Atlanta Constitution ran an article about him on his 98th birthday.
