Georgia Confederate Vet, 98, Sees Long War With Hitler

By Paul Warwick
Constitution Staff Writer

STATHAM, Ga., June 11 -- "Mister Henry" H. Doggett celebrates his 98th birthday tomorrow and his perspective today includes the belief that the war isn't near a conclusion yet.
One of the 21 remaining Georgia Confederate veterans still in the land of the living, this long-time resident of Clarke and oconee counties retired from active farming only two years ago, when his eyesight began to fail -- and he still keeps alertly up with the affairs of the world.
He has been following news of the invasion keenly, but isn't one of the category which believes that Hitler is going to surrender any time soon because of the pressure that is on him and his Nazi hordes.
"That feller Hitler isn't going to give up," Doggett said here today.  "He's going to keep on fighting until they get him in a final corner so tight he will know he can never get out."
The veteran resides near here with his daughter, Mrs. H. C. Johnson, and her husband, and several of his 16 grandchildren are expected to pay grandpaternal calls on his birthday.
"Mister Henry" was also joining in the celebration of a great-granddaughter who joined the ranks of the family today -- a well-known and highly respected clan which began in his marriage in 1880 to Miss Mary Belle Ward.
At the age of 16, this pioneer Georgian joined the Confederate forces in 1862 in Athens.  He has always been a resident of the original Clarke county, although one of those famous subdivisions for which Georgia is well known clipped off Oconee county, where he now lives, from the parent Clarke many years ago.
