I am an Engineer

Six years in Primary school, Four years in Secondary school, Two years in JC and Four years in University. That is 6+4+2+4=16 years of studies, thank you. After these sixteen years of studies, I finally graduated on June 2003 from Nanyang Technological University, Mechanical and Production Engineering faculty, with a Second Lower Honours degree and a Minor in Chinese.

I would really want to thank my family for giving me this wonderful opportunity. I am also very deeply honored to be the first grandson of my family to have graduated. I am pleased that my grandma is able to be present for my convocation. Hope that she will still be able to attend my sister's convocation in years to come.

I am not the study type. I preferred hands-on, lab, designing and projects. I fully understand the meaning of "You do well in what you like" kind of theory. I tended to score better on my pet subjects. I was grateful that I actually snapped out of complacency after I "dabao" my Electronics¡ I stopped sleeping in lectures and classes (try, but the mind is willing, the body is futile at times¡), do my tutorials (well, at least for the first two weeks, ;p) and do the past year papers (well, if you considered tracing steps from solutions as doing ;)). Anyway, I did step up a notch in my effort in studying, planning my revision two months in advance.

Looking back, life in NTU wasn't that long. I am glad that I have made more friends and grateful that I have a group of close study partners like Andrew, Jane, LingFeng, ShuHui, WeiFeng, GuiXiang aka "Tortoise Commando" and ChowKian. They had helped me so much along my course of study that I don¡¯t know what to do without them.

I also thank God that I had a good IHPT group that worked well together and we even won a 3rd for Miniturization Category.

My FYP supervisors - A/Prof Chua, A/Prof Leong and A/Prof Lim Chu Sing helped me tremendously. They not only guided me academically on the project, they had also offered me many invaluable advice and insights. My Industrial Attachment Supervisor Mr Chew Kia Guan from Singapore Technologies Kinetics also helped me to develop my professional working habits.

Well, as I stepped out of the doors of the university, I can't wait to take on the world like all the graduates. Although it is not the best of times in terms of the economical climate, I believe like all other situation - there lies an opportunity. I know I am neither a so called "high-flyer" nor a rich kid with lots of $$$ to spend on investing. I do know that working a few years and getting experience do counts a lot. There will always be jobs, there will always be opportunity and there is always a better tomorrow. Be pragmatic now while focusing on the long-term goals. We are the masters of the world in time to come!
