Here are some tips for makeing GOOD chars.

Learing to program: I have made a doc that will (hopefully) help you learn to program chars. You can download it right about.... wait for it.... steady..... here. If you already know how to program please download it and give me some feedback. Notice the guestbook at the bottom.

Makeing the char look good: First things first HAVE GOOD SPRITES. I can't tell you how many chars just have crap for sprites and no amount of programming can make them good. Next is posistion the sprites correctly in the .sff. There are some tricks to doing this. First figure out what is moveing on the char. Then position the sprites. There are 3 main ways to position sprites by the feet (probably the most used), by the body, and by the head. Cool effects are always (unless overused) cool.

Making the char cool: DO NOT HAVE YOUR CHAR BOUNCE AROUND. If your sprites are bounceing across the screen you have a problem, and I suggest you fix it. Be original not only in combos and attacks but the character itself. Some chars have been done, redone, and done some more examples might be Ryu or Goku (any form). Sure there are circumstances that prevent you from this like sprites and programming ablilty, but none the less try to make it different.

AI: In MUGEN AI is fairly easy. You mainly make a impossible command such as D, DF, F, a, F, U, D, b, y, z, DF, DB, x, D, D, F, x (no human player can do that, i don't think), and you may want to have muliple AI commands. When the AI does it have it set a var. Then have certain things controlled by this var. Maybe and energy gain or moves they can and can't do. To make HARD AI give the AI some advantages like the ones already mentioned. Make the AI fit the character. If he is a physical fighter make the AI run to the other guy and beat the hell out of him. If he is a distance fighter then have him do his ranged moves when he has the energy and when he is low on energy get him to run up and beat the crap out of them.
