10/25/2008 - ANOTHER SOLID EFFORT BY THE
HAWKS
Despite a depleted roster the
Hilbert College hockey team continues to show
tremendous heart as they are now off to a 3-0 start
for the second straight season. After defeating
Alfred
State on 10/18 the Hawks returned home to
defeat
Allegheny College 6-2
on Friday night. The team only has 13
rostered skaters this year and several have yet to
appear in a game this year thus putting tremendous
pressure on those who have been there all year.
Everyone is playing well as all three goaltenders
have won in their starts so far.
On Friday night Hilbert jumped
out to a 2-0 lead after one on goals by Jake
Tschetter and Chris Fanale. Allegheny would rally to
tie the game at 2-2, but Eric Budash would shut the
door from there. In arguably his best game; Budash
made several clutch saves until the team could get
going again. A corner shot by Travis Nowicki put the
Hawks up 3-2 and they would never look back. Nick
Delmonaco would add an insurance goal and the team
would add two late tallies to finish off the Gators.
Hilbert is 3-0 now, 2-0 in league
play and have a huge showdown with rival California
University of Pa II who is also 2-0. These teams had
a classic semi-final matchup last year that Hilbert
won 5-3. Hilbert will also play a non-league contest
at
Cazenovia College
on Saturday.

- HAWKS COME OUT FLYING
The Hilbert College hockey club began it's second
title consecutive title defense with a 7-4 victory
over the team they defeated the year before in Case
Western Reserve University. The team banked on one
of it's strengths: getting production out of it's
defensemen as familiar faces Dan Andol, Nick
Delmonaco, and Travis Nowicki combined for four
goals. Hilbert jumped out to a 5-1 lead late ub tge
second period and was on cruise control for the most
part until a few bad penalties allowed the Spartans
to make a game of it.
Despite the loss of several key players the team
looked decent in its first showing. Freshman Jake
Tschetter showed a few flashes at times, including
his first collegiate goal while Freshman goaltender
Zach Cantie stood tall when he was tested. Veterans
Steve Tenebruso and Jason Baldi chipped in a goal
apiece in the effort.
The
team travels to Olean on Saturday to take on rival
"punching bag" Alfred State in a non-league contest.
The Hawks have only lost once in eleven all-time
meetings against them. The next home game for the
two time defending champs is Friday October 24th
against Allegheny College.
