8 June 2002 Southlake Campground Knoxville TN We left the Johnson City area yesterday, and headed down I-81 for Knoxville. We’re staying in an older campground some 15 miles south of the city. At this one, as at most others we’ve been at, the campground also serves as a parking lot for RV’s in storage as well as an active campground. There also appear to be campers who have taken up full-time residence. I suppose this helps the campground owners with expenses in the fall and winter, but it’s a little disconcerting to hook up in the middle of what appears to be a RV self-storage lot. Most parks we’ve been in segregate the RV’s in storage from the regular campers, but not this one. We’re going to try to make for Bowling Green today, so that we can hit Camping World. 6 June 2002 Woodsmoke Campground Unicoi TN We have given up on trying to resolve the Verizon mix-up till we get back to Missouri, so no cheap cell phone rates for now. 4 June 2002 Woodsmoke Campground Unicoi TN We’re beginning to get an inkling of the problems RVers face—we have been needing to update our cellular phone plan, and so we went to a Verizon store today to take advantage of the unlimited nights and weekends deal. We picked out our plan, phone and accessories—trouble came when we submitted our verifiables to Verizon. We have a Missouri address, a Georgia driver’s license and are applying for an account in Tennessee; this, we were told, was name fraud. Boing! We hit the roof. On the other hand, we could see how it would ring warning bells. The problem is, though, that we ARE who we say we are! Not sure how we’ll resolve this, but I certainly don’t want it ruining my credit. |
While in Johnson City TN, we spent some time with my old archives buddy, Norma, who works at the Archives of Appalachia (East Tennessee State.) She's been an archivist for many years, but half-jokingly talks about wanting to apprentice herself to a distiller, and run her own whiskey distillery. She fixed us her excellent 'Jack Daniels Fried Chicken' one night, and I've added it to my cooking repertoire. |
