09.22.05 T.I. has created the theme for the MTV2 & Nike basketball series "Nike
Battlegrounds: King of the Court." T.I. will also perform the theme song
during the season finale as the worlds of music & basketball collide.
T.I.'s song "Battlegrounds: King of the Court," can be heard on the series
premiere of Nike Battlegrounds on MTV2 Sunday, Sept. 18th at 8pm ET.
09.15.05 Bizzy Bone has created a reality-based show that will be streamed
exclusively on AllHipHop.com in a series of weekly webisodes. The
webisodes debut Sept. 26 & Bizzy's LP "Speaking in Tongues" drops Sept.
27.
09.14.05 Kanye West will headline the "Touch the Sky" tour, featuring Common,
Fantasia and Keyshia Cole. The tour kicks off in Miami on Oct. 11 & ends
in Canada on Dec 11.
09.03.05 Kanye West criticized U.S. President George Bush & the governments
reaction to Hurricane Katrina last night during A Concert for Hurricane
Relief, a live benefit concert on NBC. West deviated from the pre-written
script. It's been five days [waiting for help] because most of the people
are black, West said. NBC quickly cut away from West.
08.29.05 Tyson Beckford is suing Sean "Diddy" Combs for $5 million for breach of
contract & copyright infringement. Beckford claims Diddy failed to renew
his Sean John contract & used his image without permission.
08.28.05 The gunman that shot Marion "Suge" Knight this morning (August 28) during
a Kanye West-sponsored party for MTV's Video Music Awards remains at
large, according to police. Police seek to question a black male wearing a
pink shirt in relation to the shooting. Knight will undergo surgery to
remove a bullet from his leg & is in good condition.
08.18.05 The Tupac Amaru Shakur Center for the Arts will unveil a bronze memorial
statue of Tupac on 9/13 in Atlanta. The unveiling takes place on the
nine-year anniversary of Tupac's death.
08.17.05 Eminem has been hit with a lawsuit by his aunt & uncle in an unusual claim
filed in Macomb County Court. Jack & Betti Schmitt claim they sold their
MO home because the Detroit rapper wanted to maintain family ties. The
lawsuit says Eminem built the Schmitts a home, but reneged on a promise
to pay them $100,000 per year.
08.03.05 Rapper 50 Cent has teamed with MTV to release his autobiography, titled
"From Pieces to Weight." At the beginning of the book, 50 Cent tells
readers that he's giving people an account of his life prior to selling
millions of records. "People want the truth," 50 writes. "This is what
happened when I was trying to get rich." The book hits shelves 8/16.
07.20.05 Rawkus Records signed an exclusive distribution deal with RED
Distribution. The label helped launch the careers of Mos Def, Talib Kweli,
Pharaoh Monch & others until Jan of 2004, when the label closed down.
Rawkus has also formed its own management company called Rawkus Management
& a film division.
07.11.05 Mos Def is in negotiations to star opposite Brenden Fraser in the new
thriller "Journey to the End of the Night." The movie centers on a man &
his son, who are both trying to better their lives through the criminal
under world. Alice Braga, who starred in "City of God" is already attached
to the project. The movie starts production in December in Brazil.
07.08.05 The city of Los Angeles & the LAPD have been ordered to pay the family of
Christopher "Notorious B.I.G." for withholding evidence about the rap
star's murder. A mistrial was declared in the case after it was revealed
that an LAPD detective withheld documents critical to the Wallace familys
argument that LAPD officers may have played a role in the murder of
Notorious B.I.G.
06.29.05 Big Pun's Widow Liza Rios, is auctioning off the deceased rapper's diamond
& gold "Terror Squad" pendant on eBay. Pun originally paid $100,000 for
the chain, which contains over 1,900 diamonds. According to the auction
page, the family is struggling, having received $8,000 since the rapper
passed away in 2000 of a heart attack.
06.22.05 Hip-Hop pioneer Kurtis Blow will be inducted into the Bronx Walk of Fame
on June 26. Blow was a fixture in the Bronx Hip-Hop scene & in 1979 Blow
became the first rapper to be signed by a major label. His hit song The
Breaks also helped ignite Hip-Hop on a global basis & earned Blow the
first certified Gold single.
06.13.05 Cam'ron is launching his own clothing line called Vavali. Vivali, which Cam says means "I'm fly" in
Italian, is available in select stores in Harlem, NY now.
06.03.05 Comedian Dave Chappelle unexpectedly surfaced in Hollywood, CA appearing
at two comedy theaters performing unrehearsed. Chappelle showed up at the
Hollywood Improv & the Comedy Store on Wednesday (June 1), performing for
small crowds. Many speculated Chappelles mental health after he suddenly
disappeared & emerged in South Africa.
05.28.05 Chicago emcee Common has partnered with celebrity design team Krispy Klean
to release a pair of limited edition Nike Dunks. The sneaker hit stores
earlier this week to coincide with the release of the conscious rappers
latest effort, BE. Only 100 pairs of Coms sneaker will be available,
retailing at a price of $350.00 per pair.
05.24.05 Afeni Shakur announced the Tupac Amaru Shakur Center for the Arts in Stone
Mountain, GA will open on 6/11. The $4 million dollar facility will focus
on mentoring high-risk youth between the ages of 12-18.
05.12.05 Justo Faison, founder of the successful Mixtape Awards, was killed in a
car crash sometime early morning Saturday (May 14) in Virginia. Faison
founded the Mixtape Awards in 1996.
05.12.05 Eminem has a new DJ & Green Lantern's replacement is a familiar face to
Hip-Hop. The Alchemist, normally affiliated with Mobb Deep, has accepted a
position with Em as his new in-house spin doctor.
05.04.05 M.O.P. announced they are making a clean, amicable break from Roc-A-Fella
Records & the newly formed Damon Dash Music Group.
04.29.05 Cam'ron has parted ways with Roc-A-Fella for Asylum/Warner Music Group.
The deal makes Cam the first non-southern act signed to Asylum. Cam's
previous home, Roc-A-Fella Records, was sold to Universal in December of
2004 for almost $10 million dollars. No release date has been issued for
Cams untitled Asylum debut.
04.28.05 Sean P. Diddy Combs hopes to tackle the Latin market with his Bad Boy
Ent. & has launched of Bad Boy Latino. The label will be helmed by
Miami-based Cuban-American rapper Pitbull. Pitbull will sign artists,
handle the marketing & help run the label. The label will release Latin
Hip-Hop, soul & tropical music.
04.26.05 Outkast member Andre Andre 3000 Benjamin has been tapped to star in and
produce a new untitled musical. Benjamin has partnered with Double Feature
Films to produce the musical, which will focus on a man with magical
powers. In addition to producing, the chart-topping rapper will also
provide original music for the unnamed film.
04.25.05 Miami rapper Jacki O confirmed that a physical altercation took place
between her & Foxy Brown yesterday (April 24th) at Circle House studios in
Miami, FL. According to Jacki O, Brown made a comment, which she
overheard. "I was looking forward to working with her," Jacki O said. Reps
for Brown were not available to comment.
04.15.05 Outkast & Rosa Parks have settled a lawsuit stemming from Park's objection
to the rap duo using her name in a song title. While Outkast & Sony BMG
admitted no unlawful activity, the parties have agreed to work on projects
"to enlighten today's youth about the significant role Rosa Parks played
in making America a better place," said Parks' guardian Dennis Archer in a
statement.
04.08.05 Ray Benzino, the Chief Brand Executive & Co-owner of The Source, has
resigned from the company today (April 8). The
rapper named a number of reasons for his departure, including his beef
with Eminem & politics.
04.05.05 Pharrell Williams recently launched The Ice Cream skate team, lead by
professional skateboarder Terry Kennedy. The team will embark on a seven
month tour to scout talent & film tricks for an upcoming DVD/CD, which
will be released in the fall. Team members include Williams younger
brother Kato, Terrell Robinson, Kevin Booker, Jacob Walder & Jimmy
Gorecki.
04.02.05 Ludacris and Will Smith will headline a concert celebrating the launch
of MTV Networks 100th channel, MTV base, the networks first pan-African
music channel. The open-air concert will take place on April 20, 2005 in
Johannesburg, South Africa, in front of over 10,000 fans. The network will
air highlights of the show on other MTV channels around the world in May
2005.

03.28.05 McDonald's is seeking to use Hip-Hop to promote their Big Mac sandwich &
have offered money to rappers who include the sandwich's name in a hit
record by summer. Artists will not receive any money upfront, but
McDonald's has offered various record labels, producers and artists $1 to
$5 every time each song is played on the radio.
03.25.05 The Cartoon Network has ordered 15 half-hour episodes of the popular comic
strip "The Boondocks." The animated show will be based on the award
winning comic strip series created by executive producer Aaron McGruder.
The series is set to premiere this October on Cartoon Network's popular
"Adult Swim" block of programming.
03.19.05 Lauryn Hill & Wyclef Jean roused appetites for a Fugees reunion yet again
when the duo reunited onstage in Malaysia at a charity concert Friday
(Mar. 18) for victims of the South Asian tsunamis.
03.10.05 Jadakiss denied being threatened by four men, who were arrested in a
stolen tow truck last night (3/9) after they allegedly flashed a gun at
the rapper as he left a tribute party to B.I.G. Jadakiss confirmed the
incident, but said the men were showing their support for him in his
lyrical rivalry against 50 Cent.

03.05.05 Authorities seek to question The Game in relation to a shooting in front
of Hot 97's offices on Monday. According to reports, police believe that
Game may be able to identify the gunman that left a 24-year-old Compton,
CA man wounded. In related news, Newsweek reports that federal authorities
have launched a sweeping probe of the hip-hop industry.
03.01.05 Rap vet Nas has decided to pen his own novels. The rapper said he's
developing a book based on his song "Sekou's Story" off his latest LP,
"Street's Disciple.
02.28.05 Jury selection started today (Feb. 28) in the trial of Lil' Kim, who is
accused of lying to a federal grand jury in relation to a daylight
shootout in NY. Testimony could begin as early as tomorrow. Kim & her
assistant are charged with perjury, obstruction of justice & making false
statements.
02.26.05 Krayzie Bone has responded to an arrest warrant that was issued for the
rapper, after being confronted with charges of child support non-payment
of his 6-year-old son.
02.25.05 The Jam Master Jay Foundation for Music & adidas will celebrate the life
of Jam Master Jay tonight (Feb. 25) with an all-star tribute in NYC. The
non-profit in Jay's name was founded by his wife Terri Mizell & is
dedicated to supporting public school music initiatives.
02.24.05 Corey "C-Murder" Miller's upcoming music video featuring scenes of the
incarcerated rapper inside prison have reportedly irked a New Orleans,
Louisiana sheriff. The video features Miller in his orange jumpsuit
complaining about racial profiling against blacks. The rapper is currently
awaiting a new murder trial for the 2002 shooting death of a 16-year old.
02.23.05 Public Enemy Tribute Weekend kicks off in NYC tomorrow (Feb. 24) with a
party for the group by Shocklee Ent. honoring the making of "It Takes a
Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back." The event takes place at Crash
Mansion at 8pm & will feature hip-hop from 1988-92. On Feb. 25th & 26th,
The Clive Davis Dept. of Recorded Music at NYU will host a discussion
about the making of the LP.
02.15.05 Lord Finesse & the Estate of Big L will honor the Harlem emcee with an
all-star tribute show at SOBs in NYC on Wednesday (Feb. 16), featuring
appearances by the Diggin' in the Crates crew, DJ Premier, Pharaoh Monche
& a host of others. Big L was shot & killed on Feb. 15, 1999. A new LP
from Big L is in the works as well.
02.13.05 According to reports, pioneering producer Rick Rubin has signed a deal
with Warner Bros. Records to distribute his American Recordings label.
Rubin founded Def Jam with rap impresario Russell Simmons. Rubin recently
returned to his Hip-Hop roots, producing for Jay-Z & Lil Jon & the East
Side Boyz in the past year.
02.06.05 Marion "Suge" Knight was arrested Saturday (Feb. 5) evening for suspicion
of violating his parole after police found marijuana in his Ford pickup
truck during a traffic stop, according to reports. Knight, 39, was
arrested in Barstow, about 100 miles northeast of downtown Los Angeles.
The rap mogul is currently awaiting transfer to state prison next week,
said sheriff's Cpl. Lorraine Riser. The Death Row Records co-founder was
also cited for not having insurance.
01.31.05 Ego trip, the collective brains behind VH1's "TV's Illest Minority
Moments", has partnered with VH1 once more to present "Race-O-Rama,"
another humorous observation of race in America, to air in February. The
"Race-O-Rama" series examines the nation's race issues - which ego trip
deems "the new pornography," - with three one-hour shows, "Blackaphobia,"
"Dude, Where's My Ghetto Pass" & "In Race We Lust." Guests include RZA,
Talib Kweli, Too Short, MC Lyte & others.
01.30.05 On Feb. 25th & 26th, The Clive Davis Department of Recorded Music at NYU
will bring together Chuck D., original Public Enemy group members & a
variety of people that brought forth the group's 1988 LP "It Takes a
Nation of Millions To Hold Us Back." A dialogue on how the LP was made &
screening of a new PE documentary will also take place.
01.29.05 Lil Kim's manager Damion Butler pleaded guilty yesterday (Jan 28) for his
participation in a broad-daylight shootout in front of Hot 97's NY offices
in 2001. Butler admitted that he fired a handgun "with the intent of
hurting someone." Lil' Kim, who is charged with conspiracy, perjury &
obstruction of justice, will stand trial on Feb. 28th.
01.27.05 Goodie Mob member Big Gipp has formed a group with St. Lunatics member Ali
& the two are preparing an LP for Nelly's Derrty Ent. this spring. After
constant run-ins at awards shows, the duo decided to work on an LP, titled
"Kinfolk," as Gipp & Ali.
01.25.05 After a 10 year hiatus, The Geto Boys' highly anticipated reunion LP "The
Foundation" hit stores today. "The Foundation" features production from Mike
Dean, Scarface, Tone Capone, Cory Mo & Mr. Mixx.
01.24.05 Jermaine Dupri has been named President of Virgin Records' Urban Music
Division. Dupri will bring his So So Def label over to Virgin & produce
for other acts.
01.21.05 After months of speculation, a representative for Lil' Wayne confirmed
that the rapper is still signed to his native label, Cash Money/Universal
and not a Jay-Z helmed Def Jam.
01.18.05 Today begins a new "Rap City" on BET with a new, modern set. Along with
the set, Mad Linx will replace Big Tigger as the host of the highly rated show, starting today.
01.16.05 Jimmy James Johnson, the man accused of punching Aftermath CEO Dr. Dre at
the Vibe Awards in November, allegedly told police that Marion "Suge"
Knight paid him $5,000 to carry out the assault. Published reports said
Johnson told police Knight paid him to carry out the attack in an attempt
to embarrass Dr. Dre. Knight previously denied any involvement.
01.15.05 G-Unit rapper Young Buck pleaded not guilty Friday (Jan. 14) to an assault
with a deadly weapon charge stemming from an incident at the Vibe Awards
last November in Santa Monica, CA. Buck is accused of stabbing Los Angeles
parolee Jimmy James Johnson after Johnson allegedly punched Aftermath
Records head Dr. Dre, as the award show was being taped.
01.11.05 With anticipation slowly building for his return, 50 Cent
is set to drop his Formula 50 VitaminWater drink to coincide with the release of
his sophomore CD, Valentine's Day Massacre. 50 and Glaceau VitaminWater recently
joined forces to introduce a new grape flavor of the low-calorie drink titled Formula 50.
Fiddy also reportedly bought a share of Glaceau -the company that owns the VitaminWater brand.
