Mirabell Gardens
Salzburg
The Mirabell Castle was built here 1606 for Salome Alt, the mistress
of the Prince-archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau. The gardens,
designed by Fischer von Erlach, are among the most beautiful in Europe.
The center garden is dominated by four large groups of statues representing
the elements. They were designed by Ottavio Mosto from Padua.
In “The Sound of Music”, Maria and the children were seen dancing around
the statue of Pegasus and the surrounding gardens, and singing “Do-Re-Me”.

Dreifaltigkeitskirche
Salzburg
Designed by Fischer von Erlach between 1694-1703, the Dreifaltigkeitskirche
(Church of the Holy Trinity) was modeled on a church by Borromini in Rome,
prefiguring von Erlach’s Karlskirche in Vienna. This was his first
structure in Salzburg. The church came about as the result of the
archbishops’ concern that Salzburg’s new town was developing haphazardly.
The Dreifaltigkeitskirche was intended to create order by introducing a
spectacular monument of the Baroque – the signature style of the city –
on the Makartplatz.

Mozart Square in the Alte Stadt
Salzburg
Designed by the sculptor Ludwig Schwanthaler, the statue of Mozart
was first unveiled in 1842 in the presence of the composer’s two sons.
It was the first sign of public recognition the great composer had received
from his hometown since his death in Vienna in 1791.
