Route 66 spans 9 states, starting in Illinois, then through Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and ending in California.  Following is the route that the Mother Road follows.

Route 66 began in Chicago and stretched all the way to Santa Monica. It started at Lakeshore Drive in Chicago, then went towards the southwest leaving Chicago. It followed approximately the same route of the I-55 all the way to Saint Louis, Missouri. From there it followed present day I-44 to Oklahoma City where it continued west along one of its successors, the I-40. It continued through New Mexico, Arizona, and California to Barstow. Next, it made a change in direction and headed south towards the Los Angles Basin along what is now the I-15. Once it entered the basin, it followed Cajon Blvd, which is now the I-215. In San Bernardino, it changed direction again, heading due west along what is now the CA SR-66. From San Dimas it continued along Foothill Blvd, Huntington Park Dr, then Colorado Blvd. When it reached Pasadena it headed south along Figueroa Street. Once the historic Pasadena Freeway was completed in 1940, it carried the Route 66 shield. 66 then intersected the 101 and the two remained together all the way to the center of Hollywood. From there, Route 66 headed toward the ocean along Santa Monica Boulevard, finally ending at the top of the cliffs at Ocean Avenue in Santa Monica.
