Central European Highlights E (Part I):

Berchtesgaden and Königssee

"Königssee is the most beautiful lake in Germany," my laboratory supervisor told me.

It was a dull morning. Misty and rainy, I set off to a small town in the far southwest corner of Germany. Looking into the cloudy sky from behind the windows of the train, I said to myself, "On such a rainy day, perhaps I really don't need to bring four films with me. Nonetheless, thank God that the main purpose of this trip is not for the sake of photography, but to visit a friend. I won't be bored." Yes, if she did not tell me that she is going to work out there, perhaps I will never have heard of this beautiful town -- Berchtesgaden.

Jessica is an English friend of mine from Cambridge. She goes to the same church as I do. A fluent speaker of German, she spends this summer holiday working in a small hotel by the lake Hintersee near Berchtesgaden. When I discovered this three months ago, I told her I would somehow find a weekend to visit her.

Königssee is probably the most famous lake in Germany. Surrounded by the Alpine Mountains, its water is cool, green and crystal clear. The lake is long and narrow, a bit like a sausage from the aerial view. There is a regular ferry service between the "port" of Königssee and several other places on the other sides of the lake. We got on board and set off.

The most famous treat of this boat tour is perhaps the "Echo from the Königssee". There is a particular cliff on the side of the lake, known as the Echo Wall. The ferry stopped in a particular point in the middle of the lake. The engine stopped. Absolute silence. Then the captain stood up with his trumpet, and played a piece of music facing the Echo Wall. After every phrase of music, there was a "rest" for the trumpet, but the music continued as the lake and mountains "answered" with the same phrase! It just sounded like a two-part rondo! If you like to interpret it in physical rather than musical terms, I would say that the sound took about 2 seconds to reflect back. You can certainly work out how far did the sound waves go.

St. Barthalomä is on the west coast of the lake, near to the middle of this long "sausage". A white small church stood there, which is the subject of many photos and postcards of Königssee. (I can show you some of these beautiful photos when I come back to Hong Kong this September). We got off there and headed off to the famous Eiskapelle, which literally means Ice Chapel. It is actually not a chapel, but accumulation of ices in a valley, so thick and deep that even in the middle of such a hot summer, it does not melt. It took us two hour to walk there from St. Barthalomä and be back. Though it was quite tiring to walk into the mountains, it was very enjoyable to chat with each other about our days in schools, the life in university and our journeys of faith.

Obersee is a small lake 20-minute walk away from the south end of the Königssee. Some say that there is the best view in Germany. Though perhaps it is a bit too exaggerated, it is really fantastic to see the reflections of the Alps on a lake so calm.

Originally we planned to take the last bus at around 7:30pm from Berchtesgaden to Ramsau, from where we have to walk to Hintersee for 45 minutes. It turned out that the last bus did not operate on Saturdays, and we had to join some other tourists to take a taxi there. (This indicated the importance of reading the timetable carefully when you plan your journey. Luckily, Jessica speaks German. Otherwise, it will be a big problem for me, as the timetable is written entirely in German and there are still many words which I have not learnt yet.)

I spent the night in the hotel Alpenhof where Jessica is working. Her boss was so kind to provide me B&B free of charge. I was offered a room in the block of workers' rooms. (Actually, on that day the hotel was full.)  Though, of course, the conditions were not as good as that of a guestroom, it matters me not since I did not have to pay.

Stars were shining above the Alps. People there went to bed as early as 10pm. What a quiet and peaceful night.
