Central European Highlights Appendix:

My Last Week in Munich

Dear friends,

Hello! How are you?

It is now the 10th week of my attachment in the University of Munich. In the pvious two weeks, I was very busy and relatively tired. Thus I did not write any newsletters.

Andy Law, my best friend from school, had left for Sweden already. Before he left, a Cambridge Hong Kong friend of mine, Benny Lo, came to visit me. Three of us joined a local tour and had a happy Saturday visiting the royal castles of Neuschwanstein and Linderhof, and a beautiful Alpine town, Oberammergau (I hope that I spell it correctly =P).

I have also made a visit to a Bavarian town, Rosenheim to meet up with a German friend, Chris, from Trinity Hall. He drove me to the biggest lake of Bavaria, Chiemsee. We went by ferry to one of the islands on the lake and took some photos of the castle, Herrenchiemsee, built by King Ludwig II (the same king who built Neuschwanstein, the "fairy-tale" castle after which the Disney's castle is modelled.)

Yesterday I have been to Schloss Nymphenberg, a summer palace in Munich. Its gardens were very beautiful.

Last Thursday was the last day of my German class in the Goethe Institute. Our teacher, his girlfriend, and several of us went together to a Biergarten ("Beer garden", a very typical Bavarian open-air restaurant). Several of them brought food there to share. (One can bring his own food to a Biergarten as long as he buy drinks there. This right is protected by a "Biergarten law" in Bavaria, passed in the 19th century.) I really enjoyed my German lessons and wish that I can continue with it when I go back to Cambridge this October.

Last Friday, I gave a presentation about my project and its results to my group colleagues. I think that the presentation was quite successful. It was the first time ever, for me to use Power Point to give a proper presentation. (I have not got a chance to use Power Point in Cambridge yet.)

This week I am staying in one of the guest rooms of the Gene Centre, for I have moved out from the apartment which I have rented for 9 weeks.

Now I am busy with writing up my report of my project which is due this Wednesday.

I will leave Munich this Saturday. I am going to spend a weekend in Heidelberg, staying in a Chinese pastor's home. Heidelberg is the best in German biomedical research, while Munich comes second. I am looking forward to visit this university town.

Next week I plan to have a four-day holiday in Switzerland, visiting Interlaken and Bern (the Swiss capital). Possibly, I will visit the Swiss Expo 2002, which is taking place in the Three Lake Region near Bern.

On 6th September (Friday) I will leave the German-speaking world for Hong Kong. Really the end of Central European journey.

OK, sorry for writing too much again. Thank you for reading my email.

Your friend,

Isaac
