Finally, it stops raining (1)

Rain. Rains. Raining. Rained.

It¡¦s England, a place in which I have not seen the sun for ages.

Cold. Cold? Cold. Cold!!! L

It¡¦s winter, a season when leave fall off the tree and the sun sets early.

Winter England.

Cold, dark, rainy and windy ¡V the four adjectives for an appropriate description of what England is like in winter.

Loughborough, located between Nottingham and Leicester, is a small town in East Midlands, England. There is a university. Renowned for its excellence achievement in sports science, Loughborough University attracts many sportsmen and sportswomen to knock on its door every year.

A rainy day.

¡§The next station is Loughborough. The train is half an hour late. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.¡¨

Half an hour. It¡¦s lucky that it is only half an hour. Since the privatisation of the British Rail several years ago, train journey in Britain has no longer been a very enjoyable option. Now, due to the accidents happened in Autumn, the British government imposes speed restriction upon the rails. Train timetables have to be rearranged. Delays are as common as having meals. ¡§What a mess,¡¨ I think.

It was a quarter to six. The sky was dark, but I could not see any stars. What I could see were numerous rain drops pouring off the sky. A small suitcase and two big bags, with the knowledge of Biochemistry, Physiology, Chemistry and so on, contained in them, added pressures to a pair of shoulders which had already been very tired. ¡§How good is it if it does not rain!¡¨

Here came Derek. My primary school classmate who emigrated to Luxembourg after Primary 5, he is now a year 2 student in Loughborough University, studying Transport Management. Many thanks I have to give him, since he gives me free accommodation for most of this Christmas holiday.

After settling in, Derek brought me to the Christmas Dinner of the Christian Union of Loughborough University, in which he is one of the cell group co-ordinators. It was the first time I tried Christmas pudding. The taste is OK, not very good, but not too bad. It is similar to the taste of mince pies, which I do not know why the British people like them very much.

It¡¦s disco after dinner. Popular British student culture. I was thinking what it would be like, if the Christian Fellowship of HKU or CUHK organises disco-going after their Christmas dinner (if they have one). Derek and I were tired and left early.

Next evening (i.e. Friday), we went to the meeting of Loughborough Chinese Christian Fellowship, which is predominantly Singaporean. I was glad to see some British Christians were there as well. Here, I met again a British guy, who went to China with Derek in the summer and met me in my Church in HK. I was surprised that he attended the Chinese Fellowship. He told me that he hoped that in the future, he can serve God through education in China. He is very interested in Chinese people and culture. He may go to China to teach English through a British voluntary organisation, after his graduation in summer. That is why he regularly attends the meeting of the Chinese Fellowship in order to learn more about Chinese culture. I appreciate his decision and action very much.

After the meeting, Derek brought me to a house-party of his friends, who recently moved into a new house in the town. It was wonderful. What I denoted is the house. The house was so colourfully decorated. Different rooms had different themes: green, red, sky blue, etc. The lighting was well designed. Artistic. Full of imagination. I doubt who will decorate one¡¦s home like that in Hong Kong. It was good for me to meet some local people there as well.

On Saturday, I went to the town centre with Derek. There is a market square. Every Saturday, there is a market with lots of stalls selling different commodities. I found the things sold in Loughborough were cheaper than that in Cambridge. Even for the barber shop, it cost me GBP 10.40 to have my hair cut in Cambridge, but it only cost Derek GBP 5.00 in Loughborough.

Sunday is the time for worship. I went to church with Derek. The church he attended is called King¡¦s church, a free evangelical charismatic church. (Don¡¦t bother all these adjectives I added.) They had bands in their worship, and the service was quite good.
