Gandalf the Grey, is the wise wizard who advises Frodo to take the ring to Rivendell. Gandalf is a member of the Istari, and one of the Maia. The Maia sent him down in the body of an old man, long with many other wizards, to help keep the inhabitents of Middle-Earth in order. Gandalf is offten referred to as 'Pilgram Grey'' by the elves. He tells Frodo about the one ring. As Frodo heads off to Bree, intending to meet Gandalf at the Inn there, Gandalf rides off to confront Saruman the White about the return of Sauron. Saruman reveals he has betrayed the Istari and is in league with Sauron. He offers Gandalf a place in the order of Sauron, but Gandalf refuses and is imprisoned on the top of the tower of Isenguard, leaving Frodo and his friends to find their own way to Rivendell, with the help of Aragorn, a ranger. Gandalf meets the hobbits again in Rivendell when he escapes the tower with the help of the Eagle King. He goes with the Fellowship on their quest and falls to his 'supposed' death in the Mines Of Moria. Gandalf returns as 'Gandalf the White', as he takes his new rank in the Istari.
