| Ernest M. Skinner is considered to be one of the premier organbuilders of the 20th century. During the first half of the century it was very popular to play arrangements, or transcriptions, of symphonic compositions on the organ. Many organs of this era are referred to as "symphonic" or "orchestral," because the builders were striving to imitate the sound of orchestral instruments, such as the French horn, clarinet, oboe, flute, etc. to accommodate the performance of these transcriptions. Ernest Skinner was the leader in this style of organbuilding, and introduced many innovations in organbuilding and organ tonal design which are still highly regarded today. The organ of Saints Peter & Paul was built in 1929 at cost of $25,000.00. Three manual and pedal, 23 ranks, over 1,2000 pipes. Presented to Father Ferdinand Bogner, pastor and chaplain to the United States Lines, at a cocktail reception aboard the S.S. Leviathan hosted by Mr. Hague, V.P. of Standard Oil and the ship’s officers. The organ was presented to the pastor and parish in appreciation of the pastoral care given to the Hoboken dock workers by Father Bogner. Dedicatory recital by organist Rubert Siricon, soloist and instruments under the direction of Richard Craskle, music director aboard the S.S. Leviathan. The tonality of the organ is relatively untouched since 1929. The past ten years have seen the instrument undergo refurbishing which includes: re-leathering of the Skinner chests, rebuilding of the reeds, conversion to solid state circuitry, new manual key contacts and pedalboard. A 4’ Swell principal was added. The Skinner Swell 8’ Flute was replaced at some earlier point by an 8’ Rohr Flute. We hope to continue restoration of this organ when funds are available. Some projects to be considered: refurbishing the Clarinet 8’, additional piston and toe studs to the console to assist the organist in registering the organ, the addition of Great Mixture and Mutation pipework. The organ is maintained by Konzelman Pipe Organs of Hoboken, NJ. For more information about PIPE ORGANS, visit http://www.pipeorgans.com HEAR THE PIPE ORGAN ON OUR CD RECORDING ORATORIO.
