| Codeine is not necessarily used to treat any life threatening illnesses, but it works in two ways. Codeine can be prescribed by your doctor or it can be bought on the street and used as an illegal drug. |
| In terms of medicinal purposes it is used as a post surgery pain medication. It is often prescribed as a relaxant. Often in the emergency room codeine is used as relaxant for people who have been having trouble breathing. They can either inject it into you or they can use and IV to get it to you. |
| Internationally, the legality issue of it has caused trouble in Germany and because of it’s close relation with morphine. For the most parts throughout the world codeine is a legal over-the-counter drug however in places like the United States, United Nations and Germany it is only available a prescription drug. |
