HONEYCRACK - Middlesborough Arena
2 June 1995

Review of Honeycrack, supporting Skunk Anansie at Middlesborough Arena on friday 2 June 1995. Written by Liam Shiels, photo by Steve Schofield, taken from KERRANG! No.550 (17 June 1995).

SKUNK ROCK

Two bands, three singles, and not even a sniff of an album. 300 bodies say that the word is out on these two, and whether it's past pedigree or future promise that's pilling 'em in doesn't seem to matter.

Anyone who isn't reminded by Honeycrack of CJ and Willie's former employers has never heard The Wildhearts. Nevertheless, Honeycrack are tremendous. Willie Dowling doesn't wear tights on his arms any more, but that old front-of-stage cockiness is still very much in place as he introduces 'Animals'.

The three-guitar vanguard isn't as messy as it might have been, and the harmonies are tighter than a Scotsman and his walet. So even if there are as yet few truly memorable choruses, like all the best tunes these probably need to be put on and worn for a bit before they get comfy. Guess we'll have to wait for the album to find out.
