Bette Midler's first album is a classic. This album is excellent! It consists mostly of covers including Do You Want To Dance, Chapel of Love, Superstar, Leader of the Pack, and Delta Dawn. Midler puts her classic touch on each one, making Do You Want To Dance a ballad instead of a dance tune, Leader of the Pack has more of a rock touch than the original, Delta Dawn is more inspiring than the original, and Superstar will bring you tears as only Midler can. Bette Midler's second album, which reached #6 on the charts, is classic Bette! This album, like many of hers, has it all. Skylark and Drinking Again are excellent ballads while Breaking Up Somebody's Home is Midler at her bitchy, rock and roll best! The album is worth the buy solely for her version of I Shall Be Released. Midler's pipes are in top form as the song starts out soft and by the end she is completely letting loose showing the listener JUST how well she can sing. Twisted is the funny, campy song while Higher and Higher (Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) has almost a gospel touch, again showing her excellent range and emotion. This album also contains the Glenn Miller classic In The Mood. Bette added lyrics and makes the song as fun as ever. BUY THIS ALBUM!!!! Bette Midler
Definitely not Bette Midler's best. The album is light and soft with no edge or genre jumping. Midler usually covers many different music genres on her albums, but not this one. Her voice is excellent which is the only reason to buy this album. The album has it's good points like her cover of Strangers In The Night and the two songs with the signature Midler emotion Tragedy and Let Me Just Follow Behind. The duet with Bob Dylan on Buckets of Rain is absolutely FUN! I Don't Want The Night To End and Old Cape Cod have that old 50's sound. Buy this album when you have all of Midler's other albums, so the collection is complete! The album is good to listen to when you've reached your point with all of your other albums. Songs For The New Depression
Bette Midler's first live album. Bette Midler as a live performer puts on a helluva show. This album shows that. The 2-Disc set catches Midler at her stunning, bitchy, emotional best. Midler's voice live, shows more than on her recordings. Her recordings never quite catch the essence of Midler. Her voice does so much more than any other in the recording industry, and this album shows that. Midler classics are here like Friends, Delta Dawn (this version is absolutely AMAZING), Hello In There, Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, and Do You Want To Dance. Up The Ladder To The Roof is a stunning achievement having the upbeat gospel, praise God beat and sound. The sexually comic Long John Blues is an outstanding example of Midler's voice. The classic Midler Sophie Jokes are also on this album. Also here is Fried Eggs, a hilarious, yet true to life emotional story that you'll memorize to tell all your friends. Live At Last
This album is flawless!! One of the best albums I have ever heard. Like Midler's Bette Midler, Bathhouse Betty, and Bette, this album covers a lot of ground. Make Yourself Comfortable, You Don't Know Me, and Storybook Children are the three outstanding ballads with the signature Midler style. These songs demonstrate how much Midler can do with the emotion in her voice like no other. Storybook Children will definitely become of a favorite of any listener. Say Goodbye to Hollywood is an excellent fast pop number while Red is pure blood and guts rock and roll like the songs on Midler's smash rock and roll album The Rose. Red shows that Bette CAN sing rock and roll with the likes of Joplin, Heart, and Joan Jett. Paradise gives us an inspirationally fun ride. Think of the Sister Act soundtrack. And of course, there's Empty Bed Blues. Midler's voice is OUTSTANDING on this comical sexual romp! A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes and La Vie En Rose have more of the slow, classical sound. Broken Blossom
Bette Midler's disco effort! Big Noise From Winnetka, My Knight in Black Leather, and her top 40 hit, Married Men are the disco dance tunes on this album. My Knight in Black Leather is definitely a guilty pleasure song, as is the entire album. You'll love the album, but definitely won't listen to it when others are around!! We all have albums and songs like that! Millworker, Cradle Days, and Rain are three absolutely stunning ballads. The album is worth the buy just for Cradle Days. This song is definitely one of the best Midler has ever recorded. Her voice does so much in this song. It's soft, it's edgy, and it's emotional. I think of it as a power ballad. Bette Midler's second live album! If you liked The Rose soundtrack, you'll like this album too. People seem to be leery about buying live albums, but you can't go wrong with Midler. She is definitely the best live performer around right now. This album shows it. The album is rock and roll, just like The Rose soundtrack. She takes some of her previous numbers like Paradise, Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, and Leader of the Pack and puts a rock and roll edge to them. Paradise is a showpiece for Midler. The song will have you dancing around screaming your guts out along with her. I have to admit that her version of Bob Seger's Fire Down Below is better than his. I'm a Seger fan and believe me when I say Midler's version is better. It's harder than Seger's and flows better. Stay With Me is the same roller coaster ride of pain and emotion as it is on The Rose soundtrack. Shiver Me Timbers, My Mother's Eyes, and I Shall Be Released are the albums ballads. The highpoint is definitely track #8. Part A is the E Street Shuffle, part B is Summer (The First Time), and part C is Leader of the Pack. Midler is sexy, stunning, and rockin' during these songs! Divine Madness Soundtrack
Bette Midler's third rock and roll album. Unlike The Rose and Divine Madness soundtracks, this is NOT the pure blood and guts Joplin like sound. This album, released in '83, is the signature 80's rock sound. I have to admit Only In Miami doesn't quite fit on this album. Midler was WAY ahead of her time with this song as it is a latin dance tune. Midler's version of Jagger's Beast of Burden is flawless. It is definitely better than the original. Midler's version flows better, and has a rock and roll sound that the original did not. Her voice contains that perfect edge throughout. Think of All I Need to Know as The Rose part two. A beautiful ballad, more stunning sung by Bette than by Aaron Neville and Linda Rondstat who made it a hit after Bette. My Eye on You is a haunting number brought to life by Midler's low edgy voice and the lasting music. Favorite Waste of Time and Heart Over Head blend the rock sound with the pop sound. No Frills
Midler's stand up comedy album is about 50% laugh out loud hilarious, and 50% chuckle. Not as funny as you might think. The album came with a parental warning sticker as the "f" word is frequently used. If you're a comedy album fan, buy it. If you're a Midler fan, buy it. If you're curious, buy it. Don't expect a whole lot though. Some of the absolutely HILARIOUS skits are Marriage, Movies, Madonna, and Mick; Why Bother?; Soph; The Unfettered Boob; and Taking Aim. Mud Will Be Flung Tonight!
This #2, triple platinum soundtrack is a perfect light pop album. The obvious excellence about this album is Midler's Wind Beneath My Wings. The #1, Grammy award winning ballad is an emotional ride that you will love for years and years to come. The song will never grow old. Midler's version of The Glory of Love is more poignant and emotional than any other version. I've Still Got My Health and Otto Titsling are bouncy, comic numbers with the latter being absolutely laugh out loud hilarious!! I Think It's Going To Rain Today and Baby Mine are slow, heartrending ballads. Oh Industry is an odd rock number. I think that's the only way to describe it. The constant strumming of the synthesizer will leave a lasting impression. BUY THIS ALBUM NOW!!! Midler's 12th album went to #6 and sold over 2 million copies. Due mostly to the huge #2 hit, From A Distance. We all know the song so there's nothing to say except stunning. This album, like Midler's Bette of Roses and Greatest Hits, is a perfect album in the pop/rock genre of music. The album has stunning ballads like The Girl Is On To You and He Was Too Good To Me/Since You Stayed Here. Two other stunning ballads are Night And Day and The Gift of Love. These two songs showcase Midler's signature emotional ballad sound. Both are flawless in every aspect in dissecting a song. The upbeat pop numbers include One More Round, Moonlight Dancing, and All of a Sudden. You won't be able to stop your feet from tapping, or fingers from drumming on these three songs!! Some People's Lives
One of those rare instances where the soundtrack was bigger than the movie. The album went to #22 and produced two semi-hit songs-Every Road Leads Back To You and In My Life. Both of these songs are worth the album purchase. They are absolutely amazing Bette Midler ballads. Her signature emotional sound shines through on these two outstanding songs. A high point of the album is Stuff Life That There. The song is a joy to listen too. It's upbeat and just plain fun. P.S. I Love You, Dreamland, and For All We Know have the ballad "period-piece" sound. Come Rain or Shine shows the excellence in which Midler can sing like no other. I Remember You/Dixie's Dream is a hilarious look at a "loving" couple! BUY IT!!!! Midler is classy on the new-age sounding ballad To Comfort You. To Deserve You and The Last Time prove Midler's ability to shine on current rock sounds. The remixes of To Deserve You reached #2 on the dance charts. The Last Time is an excellent vocal piece for Midler. As a rock song, Midler's voice is low and pissed as the lyrics indicate the pain Midler's man is causing her. She jumps to falsetto in a heartbeat as she sings about he puts her back together after the pain. Bed of Roses and It's Too Late are absolutely dynamic ballads with flawless vocals by Midler. Bette of Roses
Bette's best genre jumping album since her 1977 album Broken Blossom. This album covers SO MUCH ground. Song of Bernadette and Lullaby In Blue are classy, story-telling ballads with the latter telling of an early pregnancy, giving the child up for adoption, and constantly thinking about what she gave up. I'm Beautiful is best described, as so many critics did, as a bitchfest! The song is light rap and Midler pulls it off without a hitch. This song, like To Deserve You from Midler's 1995 Bette of Roses was huge on the dance charts, reaching #1. I Sold My Heart To The Junkman has almost a classic sound from long ago, while Big Socks, believe it or not, is a flawless R&B number. The beat is as catchy and constant as the beat in Queen's We Will Rock You. One of the many high points is One Monkey Don't Stop No Show. This jazzy, big band number will have you dancing around and singing along with Midler who's voice possesses a constant scratchy edge throughout. That's How Love Moves is a beautiful ballad and My One True Friend can be thought of as Wind Beneath My Wings part 2. There's even the Hawaiian number Ukulele Lady. An outstanding album. Bathhouse Betty
This album has an oldies sound, as quite a few songs are covers of oldies. Midler's cover of the Temptation's Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me) flows SO much better than the original and showcases Midler's amazing voice. Love TKO is definitely one of the best songs Midler has ever recorded. The bluesy sound and Midler's low tone will get stuck in your head and never grow old. The song is flawless in every aspect. God Give Me Strength and Color of Roses are the Bette Midler ballads of the album. Moses and Nobody Else But You (from her sitcom Bette) are the light pop numbers you'll be tapping your feet too. Another high point of this album is the dance tune Bless You Child. Think of Cher's Believe, but with actual Midler vocals, not some machine pulling half of it off. The other dance tune is the latin sounding number In These Shoes. Like other Midler remixes, this song was a top 10 hit on the dance charts. The song is an excellent, slightly comic latin number that will have you dancing. BUY IT!!!! Finally, Bette Midler has released a Christmas album. As a huge fan of Midler's this is something I've wanted to see her do for years and years, and now it's here, and it's perfection! I mean, who BETTEr to do a Christmas album than the Divine herself? What makes this album special is the fact that Midler didn't record the same songs as everyone else does on their Christmas albums. Granted, some of the usual standars are here, Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, White Christmas, Merry Christmas, and Winer Wonderland/Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow. But it's the other songs that make the album so enjoyable. Two of the best songs on this album are Cool Yule and Mele Kalikimaka (appropriate for Midler as she grew up in Hawaii). These two songs are uptempo and cheery and nothing but fun. A great way to get into the holiday spirit. Another upbeat song is her duet with Mr. Christmas himself, Johnny Mathis, on Winter Wonderland/Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow. The song starts off with a little comical banter between Midle and Mathis and continues it's fun all the way through. Midler's version of O Come, O Come, Emmanuel (not a song you see too much on Christmas albums) is absolutely Divine. Midler is known for her ability to reach the listner with the power of her voice and this is the song on the album that does that. A couple of jazzier sounding numbers are What Are You Doing New Year's Eve? and I've Got My Love To Keep Me Warm. The latter is an amazing song in which Midler's vocals are in top form. The highlight of the album is the Christmas version of From A Distance. It's a song we all know and Midler did a splendid job in turning it into THE ultimate holiday song. The lyrics are beautiful and just as touching, if not more, than the original. All in all, Midler sounds FABulous and the arrangements are perfect and stunning. Anyone who is a Christmas music fan, this album is for you. This album would be a perfect stocking stuffer for the holidays, so buy one for yourself and for your loved ones!
