Saturday 22nd February saw two teams from Holywood Boys Football Club in Holywood town centre in a completely different capacity.
The under 10's and under 13's are going to Holland at Easter to play in the prestigious Geusselt Cup tournament and they took to the streets of Holywood in a fund raising event designed to both generate some money and to develop links with their local community.
Holywood won the 'Best Kept Small Town' award in 2002 and the club felt that it might be a nice idea if the club was seen to support the town in this year's campaign. The two teams involved took part in a mini clean up clearing weeds and brushing up around designated areas of the town.
We got financial support from a number of local businesses and were greatly helped, both financially and constuctively by Town Centre Management and the Holywood Chamber of Trade and Commerce. The Mayor started us off in Pattons Lane and we were helped along the way by Alderman Dennis Ogborne.
The end of the day saw many tired boys but we also hope it forged new links between the club and the Town Centre that it will represent in Holland. A total of over £600 was raised to help us on our way.
May the boys and managers of Holywood Football Club take this opportunity to thank all their sponsors and the general public who showed great interest and supported us in this event. Thank you!
Thanks also to Fiona Thompson for organising the event.
