Planting Seeds

I consider myself to be an avid "gardener". I like planting seeds and watching "things" grow. You may be surprised to know that I don't really have a back-yard garden. The "garden" I am talking about is very big. It covers my entire world as I know it. The seeds I plant are very different. My seeds are my thoughts. They are those little pieces of inspiration and advice that I "plant" in people. I can actually watch them grow sometimes.

Planting seeds is something very personal and very selective. I have done it with friends, family and especially children. The more fertile the ground (in this case a person), the better the seed will take and germinate. I often get the chance to talk with a lot of people during the course of a day. A typical day would involve interaction with 25 to 50 people on average. I don't necessarily get a chance to have good conversations with these people every day, but I do end up having at least a couple exceptional ones every day. I try to plant seeds every day.

The seeds I am talking about range from wishing someone a happy birthday (that wasn't expecting me to know) to teaching someone the finer skills of interacting with other people or circumstances. The reward I get in return is a smile, a thank-you or even a hug and a kiss (if it is really good). The things I say and do for people are out of kindness and sincere interest and nothing more. It is my way of living my life as a good person who really believes that it does make a difference. It doesn't matter whether you deserve it or not. That is not my judgement call. I will plant seeds when and where I see fit. This I know, is one of my purposes in life.

I have always prided myself on being a master gardener that knows what to plant at various times and places. I don't claim to be a very wise man, just an instinctive one. There are times when "weeds" get in the way, but you would be amazed to know that most people can grow through their weeds, with a little fertilizer that I call "encouragement". Sometimes you have to get rid of the weeds to see the real beauty of a flower. It never hurts to help them do some landscaping (but only if they ask).

There is a definite connection to planting seeds and when you plant them. I always try to determine whether or not the person really does want my company in the first place. In a few cases, they may just want to be alone to think without any distractions. Isolation is sometimes the only way they can cope. They may be just foaming at the mouth and ranting for no apparent reason. I have known many women who have done this. They don't want advice or your opinion. Your job is to listen and nothing else. If there is a willingness to communicate, I usually take the opportunity.

A lot of people that know me, ask me questions or ask my opinion about something or someone, on a regular basis. I am usually flattered that they ask me. I try not to say too much. I look for the right opportunity to say the right thing and in the interim, I am quite content just to listen. You will know the right think to say when given the chance. It will come from your heart and soul.

Planting seeds is usually best carried out by doing something for someone. Sometimes words are not enough or aren't appropriate and actions may speak louder than words. The little things you do for people are a way of planting seeds. Remembering something very important to that person may have more impact than giving advice or an opinion. Planning the timing of the planting of a seed will give you a fuller picture and will give you enjoyment to your purpose.

This is an enjoyable part of everyday life. The more seeds you plant, the more seeds you will find. The more you plant, the more people will admire you. They will return the harvest from your seeds, directly to you, It will come back to you ten-fold. This is good stuff and important stuff. People have a way of returning the seeds to you that you may not even be aware of. They may be working behind the scenes on your behalf. They may be saying words of kindness about you to someone else, or defending your integrity. You just don't know how the seeds have been scattered.

The beauty is you will never run out of seeds as long as you live. There will always be new opportunities for you to plant a thought into someone you know (or don't know). It is one of those things that you can look forward to, that gives you purpose in your life. The objective is to make someone's day better and a little bit happier. Look for the smile of appreciation.
