Creating a hypertext document in MS Word

  1. Insert your disk into the disk drive and open your file by double clicking on the new diskette icon that will appear on the desktop.
  2. We will be editing our Web pages using Microsoft Word. Other software which can be used to edit in HTML (hypertext markup language) include Frontpage, Frontpage Express, Internet Communicator and certain versions of Netscape Navigator which have an edit function. Neither version of these Web browsers on these computers has editing capability. Once you begin working on your page you can continue to edit it with other software.
  3. First save your document as an HTML document by clicking on the File menu in the upper left of the top toolbar next to the Apple icon and then clicking on "Save as HTML". Save your file onto the 3 1/2" Floppy (a) drive. Please name file with your last name; i.e. Lastnameweb.htm.
  4. Create a hypertext link by highlighting the text you wish to use as your link and clicking on the link icon – the globe with the chain link under it. An "Insert Hyperlink" subscreen will appear. Type in the URL address (for example: http://www.mysite.edu) for the site you wish to link to and select "OK". The text should now appear as a blue hypertext link on your page. Remember that URLs are case-sensitive. The address must be typed in exactly as it appears in the navigation bar of your browser.
  5. Save your work by selecting "save" under the File menu or clicking on the diskette icon on the lower toolbar.
  6. To insert a picture or other image open the Insert menu and select Picture. A submenu will appear.
  7. If you have graphics on your floppy disk, select From File. In the box called "Look in:" use the down arrow to select 3 1/2" Floppy (a:). Select your image.

If you want to use an image from the clip art gallery, select From Clipart instead of From File.

  8. Save your work as in "5." above.
  9. Your Web page is being created on the hard drive of the computer you are working on. It is not being published on the World Wide Web. To publish your page you will need to upload it to a Web server, a large computer that is networked to the World Wide Web. The Web-based Family Communication Project Web page provides links to free web servers.
  10. To save your work to a web server (optional,) sign on to one of the free web space providers. You will need to follow links to the file transfer, FTP, Fetch or other upload software to transfer your files from your disk to the server and have your page published on the World Wide Web.
