What can be done to ease the pain?

When I get a sciatic attack, these are some of the ways I relieve the pain:

  • Take an aspirin or two, or an antiflammatory tablet. This temporarily relieves the discomfort. However, on a long-term basis, taking an aspirin every two days does prevent a major attack from occurring.
  • When going to bed, place at least one pillow under your knees. By doing so, you relieve the pressure that the disk or disks are applying to the sciatic nerve, and you will alieviate a bit of the pain.
  • Make sure you have at least two servings of fruit each day. For me, I've noticed that by eating fruit, it helps make the road to recovery a lot smoother.
  • Bed rest. This really has not been proven scientifically. However, if you experience back pain with your leg or hip pain, it's recommended that you spend some time lying on your back in a firm or orthopaedic bed.
  • Stretching exercises. I will go into detail later about what exercises you should be doing on a daily basis. But, if you are in bed, you can bring you knee up to your chest (as far as you can go), do pelvic tilts, and more.
  • Applying an analgesic to your leg, hip, calf, ankle, etc. to temporarily relieve the pain.
