Artist Statement

I have always been interested in both graphic and web design: it began in middle school with making drawings and playing with tools in Photoshop, making basic websites and practicing HTML in Notepad. Later, in high school, I took an internet publishing class and began learning Dreamweaver and Flash. At the same time, I took a computer science class and began learning C++. By graduation, programming won out and I started my college career as a computer science major. However, while constantly working with code and sorting algorithms, I began to long for graphics and designing websites. These longings persisted and eventually programming lost out. I finished my college career with a degree in Art: Graphic Design.

I feel as an artist and graphic designer that I pay attention to details and strive to maintain a sense of balance and order in my work. The computer has aided me in this and has allowed for a greater degree of cleanliness that is often difficult to achieve with other mediums. Even more importantly, I feel that research, forethought, and planning are essential components of the design process no matter the project, whether it be programming or design, for a client or for myself. Without these steps it is too easy to get lost, frustrated, or lose sight of a project’s goals.

Graphic design has long been a joy of mine and has worked well to help hone and balance my creative and technical skills. The possibilities of design have allowed me to work and express myself in a wide range of fields including animation, corporate identity, print, video, and web design.
