About the VT-50

The Starfield VT-50 is a two-channel, closed-back combo amp. I'd like to say it's "all-tube", but it has discrete transistors in the tone-control section.

However, all the gain appears to be achieved with valves. There are two 12AX7 valves in the preamp and, in the power amp, one ECC83 and two big unidentified valves.

It has a single input, a spring reverb unit, a Power switch and a Standby switch.

The controls (from left to right) are for Volume, Gain, Level, Master, Bass, Middle, Treble, Presence and Reverb. There is a switch for the "Lead" channel that can also be operated by a simple footswitch, which I have built for the amp.

The amp is built on two printed circuit boards, one each for the preamp and power amp. Alas, no point-to-point wiring here. At least it seems to be free of IC op-amps.

The loudspeaker is a 12" unit called a "Bulldog" that is emblazoned with yet another Union Jack.

The amp is compact, measuring only 42cm (17") wide, 48cm (19") tall and 30cm (12") deep. But it weighs a ton.

If you can shed any light on this weird thing, please write to me at dbNO-SPAM@pixie.co.za (remove the NO-SPAM, naturally!). I'd be very grateful for anything you might know, or even any bewildered remarks you might like to make....
