A Tribute To Ice-T

Acting

Ice-T started was a rapper before he was an actor and judging from his book and interviews he's done, he's got a good sense of humor about the transition. Personally I started out as a fan of his acting and fell in love with his music after I'd seen him star as Isaac 'Ice' Gregory in Players (1997), a guest star in The Law and Order Movie: Exiled (1998), and Odafin 'Fin' Tutuola on Law and Order: SVU (2000/2001/2002). I loved him in all of the above and in all of the movie's I've seen him in (Judgement Day's my favourite so far), in my opinion he's a great actor.

Televison Roles

PLAYERS

On Players Ice-T played a ex-con 'player' paroled to the FBI to work cases that could benefit from the skills of a con artist.  His co-stars included Costas Mandylor (playing Alphonse Royo), Frank John Hughes (playing Charles 'Charlie' O'Bannon) and Mia Korf (playing Christine 'Chris' Kowalski). Ice like Ice-T was one cool player. He was the leader of the three man team of con artists (though officially Agent Kowalski was in charge) and he was a smart con. The show was a lot of fun and Ice-T was great as Ice.
Ice-T played a formative role in the development of the program -

"It's a story I wrote about three criminals who are released by the Justice Department to pull off one score for them because they are number one, the best people in the world. They can do it," Ice-T explained. "They got the skills... higher skills than the cops, but also they are expendable. "They pull off the score in the pilot, but of course the Feds say, 'You know what, you're so good we're going to keep using you guys.' So you have unwilling heroes that are going to fight crime using crime in order to stay on the streets. "It's a little premise I wrote, kind of like 'The Dirty Dozen' meets 'Charlie's Angels.' It's going to be something to bug out on." [MTV News Online - NBC Extends Ice-T's Life As A Player]

There are still a few players site's online including -

The Wolf Films Players Site
Players Pad
A lot of fans still miss the show and you can find them online at the http://www.yahoogroups.com/group/playersfans discussion list and fanfic is available at http://www.fanfiction.net

LAW & ORDER: Special Victims Unit

On Law and Order: Special Victims Unit Ice-T plays a police Detective partnered with John Munch (played by Richard Belzer) unfortunately they are all to often in the background while Chris Meloni (who plays Elliot Stabler) and Marita Hagassi (who plays Olivia Benson) star. I'd much rather watch Ice and Richard Belzer but what we do see of them is usually worth watching. Ice plays a 'cool' Detective who's transferred to the SVU from Narcotic where he was involved in undercover work. He's smart and he knows how to get the job done. You'll find pictures of Ice playing Finn on the following sites - *insert* and http://www.fanfiction.net hosts fan fiction about Ice's character Fin.

"Working with Ice is always a pleasure.... He is a consummate professional, great actor, a terrific person and he has a great sense of humor. I am really looking forward to the chemistry between his character and Belzer's Detective Munch." [Dick Wolf on Ice-T joining the cast of Law and Order:SVU]

"All I know is they call me Fin... I don't know why the name is so abstract. I think the writers make abstract names so that they can make people think they're doing something." "From what I understand, my mother and father were pretty radical. Maybe Black Panthers. And I came up in that background." "I ended up going to law school, but I didn't ever stand for the bar. I just decided I would go into the police department, which kind of outraged my father. It's more like, personally, I decided that instead of just complaining, I was going to deal with things from the inside." "Initially, I think I'm probably a little bit slicker than Munch." "I'm coming from narcotics. We're faster, we're quicker. In the first script, the first scene where you see me step into the office, I'm not even dressed like this. I'm dressed like real fly, coming off the drug life. I tone it down a little bit, but I'm a little bit more jazzy dresser than these cats." [Ice-T on his character Odafin "Fin" Tutuola on Law and Order: SVU]

Movie Roles

JOHNNY MNEMONIC (1995)
A small but cool rule as J-Bone the leader of the rebels in this futuristic movie.

MEAN GUNS (1997)
In Mean Guns (1997) he plays Vincent Moon a criminal working for The Syndicate who have asked him to take care of the people who need to be punished (killed) for going against the Syndicate. He suggests a game that allows him to get involved in the action again (he's been working more in management) where the assortment of criminals and one grass come to a new prison that's going to be opened the next day and are let lose with guns and ammunition (not to mention a few baseball bats) with the promise that the last three standing each get one of three briefcases filed with 3 million dollars. Ice's character is both a participant and an observer as the game ensures.

JUDGMENT DAY (1999)
In Judgment Day (1999) he plays Matthew Reese a man who's released from prison in order to help an FBI agent save the world by rescuing the one man who is capable of destroying a massive meter heading towards the planet. This man has been kidnaped by the man responsible for killing Reeses' family and it was an attempt at revenge that lead him to get sent to prison. Ice-T is charming as Matthew Reese, he's funny and cool and I had a lot more fun watching his movie than I ever will something like Armageddon. Mario Van Pebbles who plays the 'bad guy' Ice-T is out to get, also put's in a great performance and it's not the only movie they've costarred in.
