PHILOSOPHY

Usually, much of the international research institutions belong one of these school of thougths: realism and idealism.

The ones, which are sympathetic to realism, accept the State as the principle actor in the international system. International system is the relations and power struggles between States. States are unitary and rational actors, which maximize their interests. National defence is accepted as identical with national security and regarded as high politics. The other issues such as economic and social ones are regarded as low politics.

The ones, which are aympathetic to idealism, concantrate on what ought to be instead of what the international system is. The relations between States should base on peacefull cooperation, coordinated by moral and ethical values, international law, and a global international organization, which constrains the sovereignty of State.

Instead of adopting one of these school of thoughts, we find both of them usefull and necessary in studying international relations. International system is so broad to be defined by only one perspective. In addition to realism and idealism, the other schools of thoughts such as globalism, pluralism, etc. are helpfull and necessary in studying international relations.
