| A transporter room is part of an starship or space station which is specially outfitted to transport lifeforms and small inanimate objects. The number of transporter rooms varies per ship or station the main criteria being able to evacuate all personnel within a specified time. All key components which are needed for transport are fitted in this room and the one just below that. The transporter was a device capable of almost-instantaneously moving an object from one location to another. Transporters were able to dematerialize, transmit and reassemble an object. The act of transporting was often referred to as "beaming." A transporter room is usually manned by a transporter operator. |

| The transporter chief (or transporter operator) is a crewmember stationed in one of the several transporter areas on a starship. On Starfleet vessels, this operator is usually a petty officer, ensign or lieutenant in the operations division. The Defiant has two transporter rooms that can transport up to three people at a time. |
