Lesson Plans

{table of contents}

I created and taught the following lesson plans during the Spring semester of 2001 at Southern Arkansas University in Magnolia, AR. Three of the lessons were done for Dr. Elizabeth Davis' Methods and Materials of English class. The other two were done for Dr. Patricia Clanton's Field and Observation and Curriculum and Development classes. I taught each lesson to college students. Two of the lessons were taught to the seventh grade students of Springhill Junior High School in Springhill, LA. Samples of their work and pictures of me with them are provided in each of these lessons.

I learned a lot from doing these lessons. I realized that I am capable of being a good teacher. I recieved and A for each one of these lessons, and got positive feedback from both college and junior high students. Of course, there are several areas that I need to work on. Listed below are three of those areas. Other strengths and weaknesses that I feel I have are listed in the professional developement section under "Strengths and Weaknesses."

1. I underestimate time. Both "Dear Mr. Wilson" and "Grammar Survivor" took longer than I expected them to. I had to rush the students to get them through before class ended.

2. I sometimes underprepare. Though I studied and knew my lessons well, I found that I sometimes had trouble with the presentation. I would lose track of where I was and would have to stop to regain my thoughts. This could be a potential hazard for student learning, and one that I will have to work at to erase.

3. Lessons are hard to make to be both creative and educational. I usually spent days trying to come up with a lesson that would teach and be fun. I believe that learning should be fun and seen as a priviledge rather than a chore.
