Learning Goals and Objectives

-After a lesson on propaganda techniques, the students will be able to advertise a given item, using some of the techniques discussed in class.

-This lesson should be taught as part of a sequence of lessons on propaganda techniques.  The lessons should include pop-culture, war, and literary propaganda.

Student Grouping

-For the first part of the lecture, students should be placed in whole group participation.  In this stage, it is the teacher’s job to explain the finer points of the techniques being discussed, as well as checking for student understanding.  The second part of the lesson should be for student grouping.  The groups of two or three should be given an object to advertise, using the techniques discussed in class.

Methods

-The teacher should open class by advertising something, using the techniques for the day.  In this case, the techniques will be testimonial and plain folks.  Then, the advertisement should be explained in terms of the techniques, carefully outlining each technique.  After this, students should be grouped, and assigned an object to advertise, using the techniques discussed.  The advertisement can be a t.v. or radio commercial, or a magazine advertisement.  Finally, the advertisements should be presented, and the audience should be able to identify the technique used, as well as answer other higher thinking questions about the presentation.

Activities

-Students will be given a handout to follow the lecture part.  The student grouping part will be based on the handout and lecture.

Materials

-A handout should be provided, listing the definitions, and possibly examples of the techniques being discussed.  A box of items for students to advertise should also be provided.  Also, blank sheets of paper should be provided for those who choose to advertise as a magazine advertisement.

Evaluation

-After practicing several different propaganda techniques, students should be able to correctly label an advertisement as one of the techniques discussed with 90% accuracy.

- The test should come after all desired propaganda techniques have been discussed.
