ILAYANGUDI MOSQUES


The oldest mosque in ILAYANGUDI history was constructed during the muslim migration to this town around AD 1450. This mosque was located in the first settlement area, which was having unified jamath including all sectors of life. Later, as the town grows it was necessary for ILAYANGUDI to have more than one mosque in different location forming the Jamaths based on their trade. We give below all the existing mosques in ILAYANGUDI including their year of existence.

ILAYANGUDI NESAVU PATTADAI MOSQUES

INP Thozhugai Medai Pallivayal

The existence of Ilayangudi Nesavu Pattadai Thozhugai Medai Pallivayal is since AD 1553 in the location near Thevoorani Karai in a small Medai. The present sturcture was constructed during AD 1816 and it under went two renowation during AD 1930 and 1978. This mosque has unique inner prayer hall with mimber made out of white stones. A Madarasa Hall on the right hand side used to conduct Jamath Meetings.

INP Singarathoppu Jumma Masjid

The Grand Mosque at Singarathoppu Complex was constructed during 1986 to accomodate the increased public and to have a peaceful location for prayers. This mosque complex includes Arabic Madarasa for children, Library, INP Trust office and Kallmedai (Stone Bench). Kallmedai, which was a unique identification of our Sinagarathoppu is relocated in the complex for elderly person to chit-chat between Asr, Maqrib and Isa prayers.

ILAYANGUDI MELAPALLIVASAL MOSQUE

Ilayangudi Melapallivasal was constructed during AD 1744 on the western side of the first muslim settlement area. Thus it is called Melapallivasal meaning west side mosque, though it is geographically located in south side of the present town. This mosque underwent extension during AD 1962. This mosque complex contains Madarasa, IMP Trust Office, Library, Rooms to accomodate guests etc. Huge Two minarets were constructed (approx. 90 feet) during 1985 which was tallest in the town.
