An in vivo model to screen insulin sensitisers
We have developed a simple model to screen insulin sensitisers in vivo in albino rats. Insulin resistance is the commonest cause of type 2 diabetes mellitus & cardivascular disease.
So far we have screened glibenclamide, momordica charantia fresh juice as well as karela extract, casearia esculenta , guduci satwa ( Tinospora cordifolia traditional ayurvedic extract ) which showed negative results ; metformin, rosiglitazone, insulin , water extracts of gymnema sylvestre leaf , eugenia jambolana seed, enicostemma littorale & cinnamon which have shown positive results. Screening of inula racemosa, pterocarpus marsupium, trigonella foenum greecum, coccinia indica, ficus bengalensis, Chirata, chromium piliconate, perindopril are going on. Those studies which have been completed are presented at the regional & national conferences of the Indian Pharmacological Society. Steps are being taken to publish the results in indexed journals. We welcome inquiries from business firms who are interested in the cause of diabetes prevention programmes.
