IndepenDANCE is Independence High School's co-ed dance company. Dancers practice and learn advanced jazz, modern, and ballet techniques. Dancers also gain more experience in production, choreography, and performing. Rehearsals are held during 7th period class and last until after school; dancers also rehearse on Saturdays starting in February. The students work diligently to put together a showcase concert in May, featuring all the dancers in about 15 to 18 pieces of choreography. ![]() The IndepenDANCE Concert is held annually and features all the dancers in the company. Dancers perform many different styles of dance: usually of jazz, ballet, modern, lyrical, hip-hop, and tap. Most of the pieces are student choreographed and give students the opportunity to explore their own creative choreography. The concert is also predominantly student-run with the guidance of the dancers' fellow artistic and technical staff. Concert for the 2009 year will be on May 1, 2, 7, 8 and 9. ![]() Auditions for the company are held at the end of each school year. Auditionees should have prior dance experience -- although not a requirement -- and must be students of Independence High School. The auditionees will be expected to have basic jazz training and will have to perform short choreography in the jazz, ballet, and modern genres for the faculty. Dancers are then notified a few days after the audition if they make the company.
