1883-1931 The book Gibran is best known for, The Prophet, published in 1923, brought him fame posthumously, becoming known as an inspirational classic, but only attracted moderate attention during his lifetime. Born in Bsharri, Lebanon, he and his family emigrated to the States in 1895, settling in Boston.   He returned to Lebanon from 1897-1899 to study with the (Christian) Maronite clergy, an interest reflected in much of his writing--a passion to transcend the human condition. Gibran was also a painter, having studied art in Paris, after which he settled in New York City, painting, sculpting and writing plays and poetry in both English and Arabic.
