This is what we are going to make, this cute little train. This tutorial will have 3 pages to it, one for each section of the train. This is the engine that we will be making on this page.


I wrote this pixel tutorial step by step and with screen shots so that a beginner would be able to follow it. I hope you enjoy making this train as much as I did.
Oh, don't forget to save your work often. Ok, let's have some fun!

Things you need:

*PSP 7 or 8

STEP 1. Open a new image, 200x200 transparent
Add a new raster layer
Layers>New Raster Layer
Name: Engine, click OK
In the layer palette click on the Raster 1 layer like this


Use your Flood Fill Tool and set your Foreground/Stroke color~ #FFFFFF
Click on the canvas to fill it in white (so you can see what you are doing)
Go back to the layer palette and click on your engine layer like this


STEP 2. Zoom in to 1000%
View>Zoom>Zoom In By 5 Steps; Hit Ctrl and Y together to repeat the zoom

STEP 3. Click on your paint brush tool
Apply these settings:
Square, size~ 1


Choose your Foreground/Stroke color~ #000000 (I started out with the black outline)


Follow this diagram and outline color guide, then start painting the engine pixel by pixel
We will be using a few different outline colors shown below


STEP 4. Continue painting the rest of the engine following this color guide

~~Save~~

STEP 5. Using the Magic Wand Tool apply these settings:
Add (Shift), RGB Value, Tolerance~ 0


While holding the shift key down, click inside both sides of the engine, the marching ants should look like this


STEP 6. Use your Flood Fill Tool and set your Foreground/Stroke color~ #A1A2E8 now fill in the engine blue (by clicking inside the marching ants)

~~Save~~

STEP 7. Go to
Selections>Float
Effects>3D Effects>Cutout

Apply these settings:
V/H~ 0, Opacity~ 100, Blur~ 5, Shadow color~ #1A00B6 (the same color as the outline of the engine)


Deselect
Selections>Select None

STEP 8. Using the magic wand again this time click the top part of the smoke stack, it should now look like this


STEP 9. Use your Flood Fill Tool and set your Foreground/Stroke color~ #6D6969
Click inside the smoke stack
Then go to
Selections>Float
Effects>3D Effects>Cutout

Apply these settings only changing:
Opacity~ 40, Blur~ 4.5, and color~ #000000 (the same color as the outline of the smoke stack)


Deselect
Selections>Select None

~~Save~~

STEP 10. Using the magic wand while holding the shift key down, click inside both of the wheels, it should now look like this


STEP 11. Use your Flood Fill Tool and set your Foreground/Stroke color~ #918989 now fill in the wheels grey
Go to
Selections>Float
Effects>3D Effects>Cutout

Apply these settings only change:
Opacity~ 80, Blur~ 2, and color~ #616161 (the same color as the outline of the wheels)


Deselect
Selections>Select None

~~Save~~
