Sequoyah (S-si-qua-ya) Between the years of 1809-1821 Sequoyah amazingly created the Cherokee Alphabet completely by himself, using no books and no costs.
Sequoyah's mother was Wu-te-he (also called Wurteh?) of the Red Paint Clan, and she was full Cherokee. His father was 1/2 Cherokee. (Cherokee Society is matrilineal, meaning one's clan is obtained through the mother and not the father).
Sequoyah married Sally Waters of the Bird Clan in 1815.
The silver medal around his neck was given to him in 1824 by the General Council of the Cherokee Nation. (info partiallly provided by the Cherokee Nation Website)
