Here it is: the continuing saga of my experience as an AmeriCorps Vista volunteer in Worcester, Massachusetts. I would love to hear from any other AmeriCorps volunteers or nonprofit employees--especially volunteer coordinators. Email me--tell me what you think, or share your own experiences. Together we'll survive this crazy nonprofit world! | ||||||||||||||||||

Wednesday, July 14, 2004 It's now the middle of miserable, chilly, rainy week. But that's just the weather. Everything else is A-OK. I think I've got everything set for the grant proposal--the Fleet National Bank one, the one we got an extension on. And, we were invited by the Publick House in Sturbridge to take part in the Publick House Harvest Fest. So far, Habitat's consensus is to take the Pie Contest--which, I believe, is about taste and quality, not how much pie one person can eat at one time. Which also has an appeal, but probably not in New England. I think we're above such things here! :-) I'm very excited. I think perhaps I'll just call the woman up today and take whatever Pumpkin-related event is available. I'm so excited: an event to plan! I know, I know... it's not until October. But I've got something to do! The Rally The Kerry pre-convention rally was great! It wasn't super exciting or anything--there's still a lack of "party attitude" in "Democratic Party" (this was a big part of the Dean campaign, unofficially, anyway). But Jackson Browne was pretty cool, especially when he brought out the gospel choir. Even so, it took the audience way too long to stand up and get into it. All those people who spent all that money to sit in front... what a waste! Now, Kelly and I, we would have livened things up a bit. Maybe I should start working on the campaign more. :-) They obviously need my energy. :-) But Theresa's speech was really good. She's real. She says what she thinks. She's personable. She has a foreign accent. Good times. She's not scary like Laura Bush (there's ssomething scary about her, although I can't quite pinpoint what, exactly). And Kerry was good. He seemed comfortable. More real than he used to be. I could almost see the appeal of him; he kidded around, made jokes about himself. And he made good points. I liked it. I feel better about voting for him now. I was disappointed that Edwards wasn't there. That would have been outstanding! And I now have a Kerry/Edwards bumper sticker. Of course it's on my car already! Are you kidding? I'm absolutely thrilled. :-) |

Friday, July 16, 2004 The grant proposal is finished and it should be in the hands of the Fleet National Bank Philanthropic Services advisory board. Whew. What a relief. The real story of the day is on its own page. It's the story of my apartment search. Although that particular story line has gratefully come to an end, I'm still without a home. But I'm working on it. I've got two weeks to find a place.... |
