The days are counting down. I only have four more weeks as an AmeriCorps. I then will re-enter society. How do I feel about this? Excited to move on to a new stage in my life and nervous that I won't be able to find a "real" job. Read up on my latest hopes, fears, crazy schemes, and the countdown to post-AmeriCorps life. | |||||||||||||||||||

Tuesday, November 9, 2004 I've actually been quite productive. Go me. I was keeping some work set aside for office volunteers, but some of the work had deadlines approaching, so I had to do it myself. Everyone keep your fingers crossed for the Planet Aid position. I'm supposed to hear this week if I'm one of the chosen three. I spent yesterdy afternoon at the WPI Volunteer Fair. Like most college community service fairs, it was badly planned out. College students--whether they have a service requirement or not--are not going to go out of their way to walk pass booths of nonprofits desperate for help. The're just not. Especially late afternoon on a Monday. Volunteer fairs should be crammed down their throats! They should be in the food courts and on the campus mall--in unavoidable locations. Ah well. Last night I used my free time (no meetings, no class, no nothing) to cook. I tried out some vegetarian chilli (from a box--just add beans and tomatoes) and also made some vegetable soup (threw in soup turnips and brussle sprouts to make it interesting). I'm pleased with the results of both, and I now have real food to eat for the week! Very exciting, and I should make this standard practice. I get Veterans' Day off on Thursday! Wahoo. I'm going to go get my dress altered, and then meet Jon for lunch. That evening Kelly and I are going to a wine tasting! Fun, fun, fun. * * * * * * * * On the political front: In order to soothe the soul of fractured America, Jeff Culver mixed the red and blue states into a Purple State Map of America. It's really pretty. :-) I first heard about it on NPR's Wait, Wait... Don't Tell Me! and found it on Boingboing.net. Then, apparently, USA Today made a Purple County Map of America. |

Wednesday, November 10, 2004 It's a cloudy and cold Monday. Very cold, record setting cold! Brrr. And yet, the born-in-winter-in Wisconsin me loves the crispy, cold air. Because of the cold, I got out of bed a little late this morning. My hair didn't look too bad, so I thought I'd be better off skipping the shower (oh please, everyone does it!) and just heading straight to work. Besides, it's Wednesday, I would be on-site for at least a bit during the day. OK, so I'm at work and answering phones, yada yada yada. And then I get a call from Channel 3 here in Worcester. You see, the Worcester Ice Cats have been sold and are moving away after this season. And since Habitat and the Cats are "friends," this reporter wanted our thoughts about the hole it would leave in the community, etc. I think the phone call was basically screening to see if there was anyone in the office who could give good sound bites. Apparently, I passed the test. He asked if he could drop by later in the morning. So, around 11:20, this guys shows up with a camara and some other stuff and interviewed me. I'm happy about the Habitat publicity, but other than that, I really could have done without it. I just hope I don't come across as a complete doofus. I picked up photos from Halloween and the Pumpkin Contest. Oh joy. Have a laugh and take a look. I filled out my exit papers for AmeriCorps. I am officially on my way out. I need a job! Please, someone, please.... |

Friday, November 12, 2004 It's SNOWING! Sing with me: Oh the weather outside is delightful And the snowflakes are so delightful And since we have winter coats and gloves Let's go play, let's go play, let's go play! I don't hear anyone singing. Well, I have doing quite a lot of work on the website, although most of it will no be visible to my visitors. The one thing you might notice is that there are no more ads on my site! Wahoo. Other than that, the work was mostly behind-the-scenes-file-rearrangement kind of stuff. I am soooo excited about the snow; I really can't express it enough. Nice big, fat flakes. OK, a few more things to do on the website, and then I have go design new address labels for GWHFH. Should be fun stuff. Job update: I sent off resumes to three or four (wasn't really keeping track) positions. I must say that I love Craigslist. I've found some great positions through that site. Keep your fingers crossed for me! OK, I admit, I do know who I applied to. I was just being lazy. Here, in case anyone is interested, are my current job prospects: Data Entry and Customer Service: for a local flower wholesaler: I thought it would be kind of interesting and fun--and hopefully cheap or free plants! Is it my ideal job? No. But it doesn't hurt to apply. CIEE Support Coordinator: A job that deals with international education! Wahoo! How fun is that? Development Associate-Database Assistant: A position with Project Bread, the people who coordinate the Walk ofr Hunger. This is a great organization, and the problem of hunger is very closely linked with the problem of affordable housing. This is right up my alley. Any position with the MASSPIRG: The Massachusetts Chapter of the Public Research Interest Group promotes issues starting at grassroots levels and working their way up to government levels through grass roots initiatives, campaigns, etc. This would be hard work, but very worth-while. Development Assistant: With the MFA of Boston! Wahoo. They need help writing grant proposals and keeping track of the grants. Very cool. |
