CONTEMPORARY ISSUES The Open Letter to Chamee Xiong, the Most Famous Female Singer in the Hmong World Ab, Tsab Mim, kheev lam koj paub mad Keywords: Chamee Xiong (Tsab Mim Xyooj), singer, artist, composer, women's issues, career, artist immigration, divorce, talents, Thailand, businesswoman, coping skills, survival strategies, patriarchal society Join the Free Discussion Group: "Hmong Women Network" Read reactions: click here Dear Chamee, You are the same. You did not change a lot. You hair has passed from dark to brilliant chestnut color and, your size has increased, but your voice is always clear and sweet. You are now better and more beautiful than ever. You are still the best. I want to tell you that, to remind you of your innate talent. I think if you knew it, it might help you to feel confident and to go further in your singer career. As many other Hmong women, you were a victim of your talents and of your beauty. As a wife, you were not understood as a talented artist that needs time and attention to take care of yourself to produce your art. In a patriarchal society, it is certainly very difficult to cope with Hmong rumors and social sanctions because you are a divorcee and an artist. But you did magnificently, and continue to sing meaningful songs. You have fought the demons of Hmong rumors, which is the biggest battle in all divorcees? life in our time. You are a role model for--not only divorced women but --all women of all ages who may feel afraid to act with self-respect, freedom of choice and to live by example, to tell the truth about your personal life in public: your life is a rich lesson of meanings. Thank you to share it with all Hmong people. For this courage, you gain my respect and esteem. You are a modern woman; you live with your time, fearless, intrepid, brave and intelligent. I would like to applaud your courage, and determination to be who you are: not only a great artist, but a great human being with a warm and tender heart. Regarding your songs, they are more than ever beautiful, sincere. Divorce increases your understanding of human problems, and women?s challenges and rejection. All pains are good to say because it helps to grow old well. You did know incorporate your pains, your suffering, your love, you sense of justice: your words are guns; your voice is power to change your own society. In fact, you become bigger, taller in your singer career. You are not anymore the simple singer who sings love or separation: you are now a singer of all topics: happiness, love, sadness, joy, separation, expectation, facing challenges, divorce, and loneliness. You are an advocate for Hmong social issues, especially divorcees. You know how to capture emotions, situations, stories to promote social justice and gender equity. Many women could relate their own experience to yours. And your voice really grows into maturity. Since your divorce, your voice sounds deeper, truer, and more striking. Divorce just gave you the profound experience that now inhabits your voice, your words and your songs. Do not miss too much your family in Thailand. Don't worry about your age because you won't even get old as an artist. Don't feel afraid to love again. Let the anger fly. Just be yourself. Never compare your unique path with other new and young female singers. You have more than them. You have walked to the light. You are a role model for them. You did not lose anything; on the contrary, you have gained so many things. Just take time to enjoy life as superb Day. You have been going beyond all: you won the challenge of fighting a patriarchal society and its clan where female singers never survive after marriage, and less after a divorce. You have opened the way. Be blessed! You could live your life peacefully and completely as an artist without fear and trouble. More than awareness, you take action through your own way: singing gender equity to advocate for more freedom of choice for women. Smile, Smile, Smile! Laugh at life as an exquisite journey. You are an international artist living your life as a rich and profound adventure. Feel confident to have survived hardship. Don't look back! Use your experience for your professional growth. In Hmong women history, you are the first woman who has the courage to proclaim your divorce in songs and to claim your freedom. I hope all Hmong female singers from Southeast Asia or in the US will follow your example of courage and of integrity if they came to divorce: remaining an artist, and pursuing their professional career beyond social pressures and being able to forgive and to stay kind and loving. You know you are rare in the Hmong community. I think that the Hmong philanthropic women organizations should give you an award for being the freest and the most courageous woman who has the courage to openly challenge Hmong norms, standards and values in a patriarchal society. Ab, Tsab Mim, kheev lam koj paub mad --Koj yeej hu nkauj ntau tshaj no txog Poj niam kev ua neej. Love and respect, Nyob zoo xyoo tshiab 2006 rau koj, Tsab Mim Xyooj.
