Chapter 2

"Nooooo!!!!!!" I continued screaming and struggling, finally waking up to a brightly lit room that showed signs of collapsing any minute. Clothes were strewn all over the floor and there was a torn Backstreet Boys shirt being used to cover a hole in the wall.

"Girl, what’s wrong with ya? Ya woke me up out of a perfectly good dream!" A bear that was losing its stuffing came flying towards my head.

Ducking, I noticed my friend on the floor who apparently had slept in a moth-eaten bright blue sleeping bag. I apologized, my body shaking beyond control, "I....I’m....sorry."

"Bad dream ‘gain, eh?"

"Again?" I gave her a weird look, drawing a blank.

"Geez.....Duh! Ya’ve been having bad dreams every night....’bout HIM from what ya’ve told me! .... But only since ya started sleeping over here." She looked away, "Ya’ll be with him soon. Don’t worry.... Hey, maybe it’d be best if ya take a nice, cold shower. Ya look like ya need it, badly... I’ll make ya breakfast." She bounded in the direction of the kitchen.

After the shower, I released the tears that were forced to be held back. With the radio turned up full blast, I began to calm down but froze when my mind echoed his last words to me, "Go. I’m not stopping you."

‘If he loved me so much, why didn’t he stop me?’ My mind whispered to me. The mirror showed a reflection of a girl who was once happy, and in love. "Now what do I do...."

"Honey, why are you crying?"

I blinked for a couple of minutes, not believing what I was seeing. HE was in the mirror, giving me a worried look. A light mist brewing up behind him, covering any trace of what could be seen before. I was too shocked to say anything and just called out his name questioningly.

He gave me the smile that always made my heart skip a beat, "Yeah! Do you miss me?"

"Of course I do," my voice barely audible.

"So come back to me. I need you...." He held out an open hand to me, his eyes shining bright with hope.

"I wish I could." I swallowed hard, my pride was tearing us apart and the dream was replaying over and over again in my mind....

Looking down sadly, he slowly put down his hand, "I don’t understand why you’re so unforgiving. I know I did something wrong, but I-"

Before he could finish, there was a rapping at the door. I watched as he silently disappeared into the mist, leaving behind an atmosphere of sorrow.

"Who are ya talking to?" My friend called through the door, breathing heavily.

"No...no one," I sighed with a feeling of emptiness, "Is something the matter?"

"Ah...sort of...Were ya listening to da radio?"

"Uh-huh."

"I could hear it from da kitchen. I was making sure ya were alright after hearing it. But I guess ya didn’t hear it cuz ya didn’t scream or nothin’, " She paused for a slight moment, "The DJ said one of da Backstreet Boys quit the group..."

Opening the door quickly I exclaimed, "What?!"

Forgetting about her, I pushed past and ran out to the rusty old Volkswagen parked on the driveway, not caring that I was barely clothed. Being smart at the time, my friend had left the keys in the ignition.

I frowned when it didn’t start. Again I turned the key but to no avail, causing my heart to sink. "One more time, please!" I prayed and to my relief, the engine started, "Yes!"

As I was backing out, my friend came running out the door. "Where do ya think ya’re going?". Her face had a look of shock when she didn’t receive a reply.

I didn’t care where I was going or even notice that I was pressing too hard on the gas pedal, thoughts of chaos occupied my brain. Not paying attention to what I was doing was a mistake... Before I knew it, a white Porsche appeared out of nowhere and the driver didn’t seem to notice. He was facing the other direction, obviously looking for someone. A creepy feeling of familiarity washed over me as I caught a glimpse of his face.

‘Never mind him," my mind yelled at me, ‘Do something!’ I desperately stepped on the brakes watching in horror when the rear-view mirror showed the engine dropping out onto the middle of the street. I looked forward in time to see the hood of the car pop up. Without thinking, I turned the wheel hearing the sound of metal crashing against metal. Then everything went black.....

My ears picked up two males having a soft conversation. Afraid to open my eyes, I just listened quietly.

"How is she, Doc?"

"We were close to losing her. But somehow she’s been able to make it through the night..." After a while he asked, "How is the other patient doing?"

"Well, her car directly hit the driver’s side of his car. Just saying it sounds awful..." He trailed off.

"So I’m guessing he never made it."

Silence.

"I’m afraid not."

"Too bad....What was the fellow’s name?"

There was a rustling of papers, "Uh....Alexander, I believe...."
