Chapter 3

I lay motionless beneath the starch-white hospital sheets for a couple of hours, thinking and hearing nothing except of the collision. I mindlessly watched, with tear-stung eyes, the doctors and nurses enter in and out of the room for check-ups while also tending to one of their patients next door who kept on yelling, "Nurse!".

"If You Want It To Be Good Girl (Get Yourself A Bad Boy)" could be heard down the hall. It was being sung off-key by a female voice. Soon, rapid knocks came at the door and in stepped the weird roommate of mine, carelessly swinging her 50’s looking purse around, "Ya don’t look so hot, kid." She commented, heading towards the window and opening the shades with a flourish.

I slowly turned towards the newly washed clear glass which showed a gorgeous red-orange tint appearing over the eastern horizon, indicating the day was just beginning.

"Nurse! Nurse, can you come in here please?" A male voice yelled from next door.

We both ignored it....obviously because we weren’t nurses!

At first she just gave me an odd look. Being the ever dramatic character, she made a big show of sitting on the edge of the bed, then waving what looked like a magician’s wand over my head and chanting some sort of spell.

"Would you knock that off!" I slapped it away, getting annoyed after letting her make a fool of herself for ten minutes.

The forest-green that stared back at me flashed, "I’m just tryin’ to make ya feel better." Then taking a far-off look, "See! Ya’re startin’ to forget ‘bout him already." Still on the bed, she crawled on her belly and, started sifting through the hospital food set on a gray tray near the foot of the bed....while picking her nose at the same time.

I wrinkled my nose, obviously disgusted, I tried to kick her off the bed. "And just what makes you think it would work?" I questioned, raising an eyebrow.

"Hey, it worked on AJ...." She turned her head to look at me, waiting for my reaction.

Against my better judgment, I sat straight up. (That was painful, I felt and heard my back crack!) Accidentally falling off the bed I screamed, "Oh my....I can’t believe I forgot! Is he....Is he...." Not being able to finish, I doubled-over in hysterics. Hiccups consuming whatever I had left to say.

"Nurse! Nurse!" Another voice called out from next door.

‘Why does that voice sound so familiar?’ I asked myself with alertness. About to calm down, I glanced at my friend, and noticed she was now close to the door and doing some sort of motion, "That isn’t funny! I’ve just been in a car accident....and killed AJ.... And all you can do is dance around like a fool? This isn’t the time! Are you out of your mind?"

"I needa go pee!" She squealed, dashing out making loud clacking noises with her shoes as she ran.

"Nurse!" Multiple voices called this time.

My ears were ringing and my mind asked me, ‘Where is that nurse anyway?’ Listening intently to them for awhile, I finally muttered to myself "Ugh- I can’t stand this!"

Using whatever strength I had left, I started crawling....headed for the voices. Once in the heavily scented room I grabbed onto the edge of the door, pulling myself up to a standing position still feeling weak. The floral scents the room held began to surround me....It was too much....I felt my eyes watering, but soon opened them as my vision focused on whoever had called out ‘Nurse’ incessantly.

Four pairs of eyes looked over at me expectantly, "You’re not a nurse," one of them joked. He was lying on the bed hooked up to machines that were monitoring his health.

"Would you shut-" My heart leaped into my throat as my eyes locked with who had just spoken. "It can’t be....it just can’t be!...."
