Chapter 3

"Meanwhile back at the house, I was putting on the finishing touches. I was dressed in a three-quarters length skirt with a slit up the side, a red tank top, a sheer black shirt, and black heels. I left my short brown bob down and curled the ends under a bit. A little makeup and perfume and I was ready to go, so I headed downstairs. I stopped and posed in front of Kevin and Katie. "So, what do you guys think?"

"You look great," Katie replied.

"How much did that cost me?" Kevin asked.

I gave him my puppy dog face and bounced up and down a little. "Kev-in," I whined.

He smiled. "OK, stop. Don't start whining. You look beautiful."

"Thank you," I said as the doorbell rang. "There he is. Kevin, will you get the door please?"

"I don't see why you can't get it yourself," Kevin said standing.

"KEVIN!" two female voices yelled.

"OK, OK, I'm going," he said and returned a few moments later with Lance.

"Hi everyone. Nice to see you again, Katie. You ready to go, Erika?" Lance asked.

"Sure, just let me grab my purse." I turned and picked up my purse from the hall table. "Good night, guys," I said and hugged Katie and kissed Kevin on the cheek.

Kevin put his arm around Katie's waist and watched me walk out the door with Lance. "God, I feel like a father watching his two daughters go off on their first dates."

"I know," Katie replied, hugging him back. "The house is so quiet." She looked up at Kevin.

He smiled down at her and kissed her softly. "And what do you suggest we do with a quiet house?" he asked.

Katie took his hands in hers and led him upstairs. "Oh, I have a few ideas…"

Lance and I walked out onto the front porch. He stopped for a moment and looked at me. "You are tall," he said.

"Oh my…" I trailed off, realizing that I now stood almost two inches taller than him in my heels. "I can run inside and put on a different pair of shoes."

Lance grabbed my hand and led me to the car. "No, you look wonderful. I'm used to people being taller than me. Really. Let's just go," he told me.

"OK," I said and got into the car.

Dinner with Lance was wonderful. He told me about his friends and their group and I talked about school. After dinner he had suggested a walk on the beach, so that's where we were now. We were walking hand in hand along the shore. I had my shoes off and was carrying them in my other hand. We paused for a moment and turned to face the ocean. Lance turned toward me. Since I had my shoes off, he was now actually a hair taller then me. "I'm glad you took yourshoes off," he told me.

"Why?" I asked.

He took my face in his hands. "Cause it makes it easier for me to do this." He leaned in and kissed me softly. After a moment, I wound my arms around his neck and parted my lips to deepen the kiss. After another long moment, we pulled away. He simply smiled. "Let's go, Ms. Richardson. I think it's about time we get you home."

We walked back to the 4runner and headed home. Lance got out of the car and walked me to the door. I really wasn't ready for the night to end; it was still pretty early. "Do you wanna come in for a while, maybe watch a movie?" I asked.

"Sure," he replied, following me into the house.

"Do you mind if I go change really quick. The rec room is right down those stairs," I pointed.

Lance started to the staircase. "Sure, no problem."

I ran upstairs and changed into my pajamas, shorts and a tee shirt, pulled on some socks, and pulled my hair up. Then I walked back downstairs. Lance was waiting for me in the rec room. When I walked in he pulled me to him and kissed me softly. I pulled away from him and smiled. "So, what do you wanna watch?" I asked.

"You don't have 'Clue' by any chance, do you?" Lance asked.

"You've gotta be kidding. That's gotta be like my all time favorite movie," I said, pulling the movie off the shelf and popping it into the VCR. Lance sat on the couch and motioned for me to join him. I curled up next to him and settled myself into the crook of his arm. Then we both fell asleep to the sounds of Mrs. Peacock slurping her soup.

While Lance and I were at home sleeping, Kim and Nick were walking into the theater.

"What do you wanna see?" Nick asked Kim.

Kim looked at her choices. "What about 'Urban Legends'?" she said.

"The lady had chosen. Two for 'Urban Legends', please," Nick told the cashier. He paid for their tickets then turned to her, "Do you want popcorn or anything?"

"I just ate a huge dinner, Nick. I think I'll pass," Kim stated, clutching her stomach and laughing.

Twenty minutes later the movie was starting. It was supposed to be scary, but Nick and Kim were making fun of it already.

"Oh yeah, she so could have gotten killed before she pulled into the gas station," Nick whispered to Kim.

"I know. This movie is gonna be predictable," Kim whispered back, laughing.

This continued all throughout the movie until the party scene when they microwaved the dog. Kim grabbed Nick's arm and buried her face in his shoulder. Nick laughed softly. He put a finger under her chin and tilted her face up to his. She looked directly into his crystal clear blue eyes, then leaned in slowly for the kiss. His lips were incredibly soft, and the kiss was gentle. He pulled away and brushed his thumb across her cheek. Kim smiled at him and rested her head on his shoulder and they watched the rest of the movie.

The couple walked hand in hand to the parking lot. "OK, is it just me, or did the end of the movie suck?" Nick asked.

"It's not just you. I mean psycho woman gets shot, thrown out a second story window, still manages to attack them in the car with an axe, get thrown through the windshield and into a river, yet she's still alive. How unrealistic can they be?" Kim asked.

They reached the car and Nick unlocked the doors. Kim just stood there. "Um, Nick. As stupid as this sounds, I'm not getting in that car until you make sure there's no one in there."

He laughed. "OK, but if I get my head chopped off, I'm gonna be blaming you."

"Just do it, pretty boy," Kim responded.

Nick laughed again, but checked the car anyway. When he assured Kim there was nothing there, they got in the car and drove back to the house. Nick was the perfect gentleman, opening her car door for her and walking her to the door.

"I had fun, Nick. This was really nice," Kim said, looking up at him.

"Yes, it was," Nick said, and bent to kiss Kim. She wrapped her arms around his neck and let herself get lost in his kiss. She pulled away, slightly breathless, and kissed his cheek. "Good night, Nick," Kim said softly. She entered the house and heard the TV on in the rec room. She walked in the room to see who was still up and found Erika and a guy she assumed was Lance, cuddled together, asleep on the couch. She laughed softly, turned off the TV, and quietly walked upstairs to go to bed.
